Hey I have a 91 240sx SE. Wondering what my options are as far as what engines to swap into it. So far I hear SR20DET is a good way to go, and a few things about the RB series, but I always like to go all out when I do anything. So I’d like to know:
-What engines can I swap in that would be compatible?
-What are the benefits and dissadvantages of each if any?
-How badly does each affect gas mileage?
Any other words of wisdom are welcomed. Depending on what I find out, I’d prefer to still use it as a way to and from work and places, but if it would become a gas guzler i can switch it up lol
in compatible motors, i’d see the RB-series (rb26,25,20) as “going all out” but you can do up an sr or even a ka pretty well for that amount of money.
the rb series have more weight than the sr or the ka, but can dish out enough power to compensate for it. More weight also affects how the car will handle. i’m not sure how good/bad these engines are for fuel. More power = more fuel. . .
like kent said, the sr20’s are best bang for buck, and all the money saved from not doing an rb engine can be put to fortifying this one. I’d assume that this engine is pretty good on fuel since it has the lowest displacement. Weight is also the lowest since it’s an aluminum block, so handling should improve if you have the supporting suspension mods. This engine is also a complete drop-in since it was designed for this chassis
i know fuck all about the ca18det engine. . .there’s a few people on this site that have it. . .mebbe they’ll chip in . . .
the ka24de is getting a bit more popular to boost nowadays. . .it can put down some decent power as well but you might want to have a few of them around if you go this way, they don’t have as much aftermarket support or research as the other engines, so tuning can be a little tricky. This engine has an iron block so you can either see it as a stronger block or more weight. . .
with any engine, if you want reliablity you’re going to have to spend some money, same with making power. . .each engine has it’s ups and downs
ask yourself these questions: what’s your budget? what type of driving will you be doing? what amound of power you looking at making?
ps. i’m not trying to make a ka/sr/rb/ca fuckfest … . i’m for all nissan engines, to each their own. .
Nice, good info, thanks. Well my KA24DE has 245xxx on it right now, is it even worth tuning this one up anymore? Seems like the newer sr20 would be less likely to fail after putting in alot of money into the car. Generaly my goal is to build up a pretty fast(300ish hp/torque), reliable car that I can still use as a daily driver (about 15-20kms per day).
go sr for what u want, less bullshit and already capable of putting down those numbers with a few simple mods and lots of parts available.(compared to others) dont flame me for this one guys.
i dunno, why do people get flamed for anything they say.from now on i am gonna put no offense, and in my own opinion,on everyone of my posts.to avoid flamage from happening. 8)
Yes hes right SR is a simple swap and makes some mean power with few mods. I have personally seen cars in the 280 whp range with just exhaust, intercooler, boost controller, intake, and ecu tune.
