I’m looking to possibly put a set of 17x7" wheels onto the SHO. I have a set of 4-245/45/17 BFG tires in the basement that I’d like to use but am a little worried about tire bulge. My Mustang runs a 17x8.5" wheel on the same tire and stretches it pretty good…not sure how much 1.5" will affect it. I seen a few 7.5" wheels with this tire size ('93 Mustang Cobra factory sizes) and it looked really nice…
So, anyone have any pics???
…or a 17x7" wheel I could borrow for a day to mount my tire onto:)
You are going to have a helluva time doing that. Good luck. The tire shoulder and side wall won’t take much abuse on that narrow of a rim. Your cornering will be cut down substantially but on the bright side, you will be hard pressed to hit any curb out there with your rim.
Here’s a pic of the Cobra 7.5" wheel with a 245/45/17…looks like a nice fit. I’m having a tough time thinking .5" will make as drastic of a difference.
That .5" makes a big difference Mike. Especially when you get smaller aspect ratios like 50 and 45 series. I have read that even 235/45/17 is getting on the big side of a 17x7" rim. I would see if you could stake a trade or sell yours for some 225/50 or 235/45. They would fit better.
edit PS. Beware of fitment issues with your strut housings and fenders with 245’s on the SHO’s. I’d post a link for you bvut this stupid firefox wont let me… Off to the laptop then I’ll post the link…
I still gotta see a pic or try one on myself to be a believer…I’m not fully convinced. If we (SHO owners) can throw 225’s onto our stock 16x6" wheel and get moderate bulge then adding an inch of width to the wheel and less than an inch width to tire would net a similar result with possibly less bulging…I really need to find a pic…
edit: the 235/45 is too short or a tire for my liking and 225/50 is too narrow to make the 17’s worth the upgrade. I have my eyes set on a specific wheel that is only offered 17x7…I would much prefer a wider wheel but if it looks rediculous and will perform sloppy then I won’t bother with that wheel. The other thought is to redrill the fronts for a Mustang wheel and go to a spacer for the rear:) http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=51369 http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=56463
FYI, a 16" rim is going to be more forgiving than a 17" because the sidewall is wider and has more give to it. You can do what you want but like I said, I would advise against a 7" wide rim. There are plenty of 17x8’s that are affordable.
You also have to think about variance in tire brand. I think BFG’s run on the larger side. When you compare their 245 to say a Firestone 245, there is quite a difference.
i’ve got 245/40r18’s kumho spts on my 18x7 rims that bulge slightly, but before that i had fuzion zri’s that fit PERFECT, so it depends on the tire some run a little wider than others, when i say bulge a little i mean a little and the way i see it its just protection from curbs and pot holes
I appreciate the responses so far…I realize a 7" will be a tight fit but REALLY wanted to see a pic as opposed to discussion as to what it may look like/perform like…or I’d like to hear directly from those who have run this size (if anyone has).
That depends on the size of the tire though… The Azenis 205/50R15 is huge compared to other tires, but the 195/60R14 is a damn bicycle tire. Some of the sizes have cantilvered sidewalls, making the tire fit a narrower rim without sacrificing the tread width, but not all of them do, not even in the same brand and model tire.
