What was all involved?

well i know they arent all that different of a platform, but a '99 z28 will be a stiffer setup and also has wider rims/tires, so how can it not handle better? plus arent the 4th gens alittle wider, so that would probly add to stability?
handling isnt necessarily about stiffness, wideness, and tire size. suspension geometery and weight balance is also important. the rear suspension on all 3rd and 4th gens are the same, but the 4th gens have different rack and pinion front end, and thirdgens are macpherson strut. the only thirdgens i’d consider to handle well are the firebird formula, GTA Trans ams, and Irocz. they got the biggest sway bars and stiffest springs. stock sway bars on my car are 36mm/24mm. thats pretty big and it really hugs the road.
I can say from personal experience that 3rd gens definately handle 100% better than a 4th gen. I have a 91 RS and a 95 Z28. I put the exact same suspension work into both cars and the 3rd gen handled better by far. The third gen is also a lot lighter. I read of someone doing an LS1 swap in a 3rd gen and i guess because of the weight difference the 3rd gen ran high 12’s with a stock LS1. Good luck either way.
i have a hard time beleiving that.
maybe not 100% but i have read it all over, 3rd gens are excellent handlers, and as keith o said(a man that road races all the time) id take his word too
Ok I am having a hard time understanding how the 4th gen is heavier than the 3rd gen
3rd Gen Z28 specs
L:192.6" W:72.8" H: 50.4"
Weight: 3,300 lbs
4th Gen
L:193.5" W:74.1" H:51.2"
Weight: 3,440 Lbs
Thats 140 lbs difference…which isnt much but I would think the 4th gen would be lighter considering the alum block and lighter body materials. Can someone please explain why considering they still are basically the same size?
Weight and available front camber in stock form.
Also remember, that the 3rd gens that you drove were probably 10 years older than the 4th gens. Bushings, shocks, springs and body structure all get tired with age.
I am talking stock and my 4th gen road race car is still a PIG. Interesting enough, I was offered a 3rd gen road race car today for next-to-nothing but I have to go to St. Louis to pick up. I am seriously considering it…
100lbs is huge on a road race course.
ya, i know 4th gens are a bit sluggish but with the setup i have, i was amazed by how well it worked at auto-x…even my instructor thought it was significantly better than his Z28(also a 4th gen though). i know the 4th gens can be made decent but even stock they feel good to me besides the sluggish feeling. its possible the 3rd gens i drove were just a bit old, but i drove a 91 back when i was 16, so it wasnt 10 years old back then.
I’d be real suprised if you sell your Mustang for $7000.
yep, thirdgens handle good…thats why i bought one. i got a great deal on mine. very impressed how it handles. the stock seats tho suck and dont hold you in on hard corners… thats one reason i wanted to do my interior next with good seats from corbeau or so.
lsx FTW

Good place to find the information you are looking for about 3rd gen swaps.
irocs look totally badass when all cleaned up
OK but I am wondering how the 4th gens are that much heavier…considering that they are basically the same size and the 4th gens have way lighter body parts.

i think it has to do with the frame. they are abit bigger…not by much but they are wider and longer by an inch or two. haha, but i guess the weight lies in the frame. cuz the rear suspension is the same. the front however is different. probly extra weight due to the different front design.
and how heavy is a T56 over a 700r4?
i think i am going with a 3rd gen with a lsx swap. Its just something you dont see everyday and will be a hit at the parking lot and get some looks at a car cruise or show…
another car with a chevy engine, I don’t think anyone will notice.
just about every car at shows anymore have chebbie engines, even most fords. If you want to be different you may want to try something else.
good luck on your project.
