ok, on my gf car the hub needed replaced. so over the weekend i pop the old one out, and get the new one ready. however, there is a seal in the box. well, there is no seal on the old one(which is why i think maybe it went bad?) where the hell does this seal go? it fits right on the back of the hub, but it doesnt fit into the hub opening on the car. i checked a repair manual, and it says the axle has to be removed to replace the seal. it does have a picture of where the seal goes, but its such a crappy picture. anyone know exactly how this goes in? since there was no old one to compare to, im kinda lost. i;ve never replaced a hub before. and part to of teh question, the axle on cavys, do they come out the same way as say on my integra? get a prybar and pry it out of the tranny then pound the crap out of it to put it back?
half shaft should come out the same way… pop it out. i’ve never seen a hub seal on gm cars…
yeah im kinda confused as to why in the repair manual it would say where to put it, but there wasnt one there to begin with. im sure it was the original hub, car just turned 50k miles
you sure it wasn’t part of the packaging? or possibly for another application.
i’ll snap a pic this weekend
The seal comes in the box because GM didn’t put one on originally (any surprise??)
You don’t need to put it on if you don’t want to, just swap out the assemblies. If you do wanna put it on though you have to take the strut off and pull the spindle so the axle pops through it, you can leave the axle in the transmission… Then the seals go against the back part of the spindle where the Axle and hub assembly meet.
Did you ever pull the struts/spindles/etc on your Beretta? They should be the same suspension setup, the part number for the hub assembly is the same I know that…
oh didnt know that it didnt come with the car. i never messed with any of that stuff on my old beretta. if this one lasted 50K miles, then i;m sure the new one will too. id rather not run the risk of breaking anything else(as the car is almost 14 years old) and just leave it as is. if this one goes out in another 50K, well i doubt she’ll still have the car by then haha
Yeah you’re looking at a 30 minute job to replace the bearing without seal vs. an hour to pull the other stuff off and add the seal.
