94 Jetta, good or bad?

I’ve come upon a 1994 VW Jetta, guy said it needs a windshield and some body work. Has 176k on the motor. I’m not to familiar with VW’s, is this something that I should stay away from, or is worth a look?

sorry if it was no help

i will say stay away from vw but that is my opinion

theres a really nice one forsale on 51 past the elizabeth bridge on the left side at that little toyota collision place

it can be a money pit. a new windshield alone will be $300 from ryans auto glass. if its a 4cyl 8v motor the bottom end should be bullet proof since it has some froged internals. watch out for o2 sensors, cost you about 90 bucks for the one that goes in the cat, coil pack like to go bad, door latches, window regulators, control arm bushings, idle speed sensor/ thottle body, exhaust= these are the things ive replaced on my fiance’s cabrio. which shares the same motor basically except a 94 runs obd 1.

if its under $1000 it say it should be a good deal. anymore than that i would probably stay away.

engines are cheap-- 125 bucks all day long. only way u kill them is to extremely overheat it, or run it out of oil forever. 94’s came w/ forged crank and oil squirters. the heads also have dual valve springs.

trannys are prone to grind in reverse and 2nd gear shift. not hard to repair or replace, but costly. thankfully, older trannys fit and are cheaper.

clutches run around 175 for a good sachs kit, less for cheapo brand.

check for rust. wheel wells, rockers, floors. only cars i seen rusted were neglected ones–talking spit on the floor neglected.

regulators go bad on power ones. everything else is normal wear and tear.

price wise, they are still holding value, but on flip side i seen beat ones go for under a grand.
