951 winter progress

and considering I know what diff is in there, it doesn’t suck

Mike:

Progress looks great. That sure is a ton of work you are doing to that thing… and the cost to repair is just outrageous! You might be better sticking with the e30

This is what I have to fix this winter… looks like both of us are fixing our stupid mistakes of doing burnouts… http://www.elmiracalvarynaz.org/mike/lsd2.jpg

Looks like fun Mike. Should have an update on this tomorrow. Looks like the block is getting entirely stripped and the crank/pistons are coming out.

:present:

can you do a wheelie going in reverse?

“Never seen a failure like this”
“Catostrophic failure”
“Find a new gearbox”
“Pinion bearing exploded and took out everything in there, except maybe the quaife, which should be serviced just in case”

Shit.

Photos when they show up in my email…

ouch

That sucks Mike maybe a S2 trans for a little quicker acceleration or maybe a 6spd:D

Actually with his “driving style” I would suggest something custom.

which means a high dollar hewland one then im guessing

I havent decided what I’m doing.

Incinerate?

sucky

Options I’m now considering (in order of likely, to unlikely).

The last one being stock. All of course will be reman’d and with my quaife (serviced before reinstallation).

the first one, followed by the 3rd one are my favorites. I donno if you need / care about the higher top speed, but I see it as a more “usable” set of gearing, with a lower cruising RPM in 6th.

like i said before, the 51mph 1st gear gets the nod in my book!

doubling local speed limits in 2nd gear > *

i like the 3rd one. Looks like better off the line acceleration without sacrificing too much top end. Are you really gonna get that up to 205mph?

I dont care about off the line acceleration. I dont drag race, the new gearbox will NEVER be launched in anger. The car is capable of 200mph + but I doubt I’ll ever attempt it, unless I take the car out west. I’ve seen 170+ in it and it still had lots of power left (this was on pump gas).

The first is ideal because of gas mileage in 6th and it allows me 1 bar at 30mph or so in second gear and on most tracks I’ll never have to leave 4th.

Ok, narrowed down gearbox choices to two real possibilities and one I’m doing research on. Sadly, I continue to like rare expensive parts… sigh

'80 924 Turbo G31 Gearbox
Only produced in 1980 in conjunction with the 924 Carrera GT, GTP and GTR
Less than 3000 of them. However, it’s considered to be the strongest FR Porsche transaxle in existance, dogleg box, based on the 911 915 trans, opposed to every other 924/944/968 trans which are audi boxes.

968 Turbo RS Gearbox
Stupid rare, has to be ordered through Porsche Motorsports with a VIN number, 20 cars were built (Turbo or RS varient), 16 street, 4 track, with a handful of spares. I have a guy who purchased one a couple years back looking into it for me. 6 speed, midly beefed up, retardedly high gearing. (just what I’m looking for :))

928 GTS Gearbox
The last itineration of the 928, these get taken by most of the west coast racers, as most of the GTS’ ended up in California. Extremely strong, but would definitely require a lot of custom work. So I’m not really considering this as an option, just doing the research right now.

Most likely I see myself ending up with the G31, which is oddly nicknamed the snailshell.

931 Porsche Box

944 Audi Box

Or worst case, I may build another Audi based box, but I dont really want to.

I also picked up a parts car to scavange some stuff off of, which I posted in Gen Auto, here are the photos again:

Also, I stopped by my engine guy’s house the other day, and we discussed some options, here’s his official comment over on rennlist

the 931 gearbox is the 4spd right? I think there was a guy who had one in a 951 I read a while back and it would do something ~70mph in 1st or something but I dont have a exact number
