'97 Neon 5 speed (ugly, but unstoppable, low-ish miles, and $$ parts)

I am pretty confident that Kristin will not ever drive with me in this car again, so it’s time to get rid of it  I was going to get it painted, but then I decided not to spend the money there, and I am too busy to paint it myself. Here are the details:

History and Maintenance:

  • New factory front motor mount installed at 84k
  • New head gasket, timing belt, top end gaskets, and fluid change at 84k

  • New water pump and timing belt installed at time of motor install

  • New motor installed at 75k (motor has 4k less miles than the chassis)

  • 4.12 gears and OBX lsd were installed around 58k

The car gets 34+ mpg city, and higher highway. When I bought it, the passenger window wouldn’t roll down (that is now fixed), and the head gasket was seeping from the rear (also fixed). The car is primer, and minimal rust. The hood has some rust at the very front showing through, and there is a quarter sized spot above the passenger-side door. Other than that, there is no structural rust, just a few surface spots from the primer being too thin.

The car starts right up, doesn’t leak fluids, drives nice, has a good stereo, takes 87 octane gas (PCM asks for 93 if you take it to 7,800 rpm, I don’t), comfortable seats, passes inspection, etc…

The car has just over 84,000 miles on it, the engine has just around 80,000 miles on it. The transmission is a special gearset that was installed by my friend who works at New Venture Gear, the company who makes the neon transmission. When he put in the 4.12 gears, he also installed the OBX lsd. The transmission alone is probably worth $800, since it is from what I know, one of a kind. The rest of the mods are worth way more than my total asking price as well.

The only real problem other than the car being ugly is that there is an exhaust leak. I think it’s a worn donut gasket from when I was doing the head gasket, but I am not totally sure. It’s not unbearable, but when you accelerate, you can hear it leaking from in front of the drivers seat.

Wonderful daily driver for gas savings, unstoppable winter car with these great snow tires and LSD, heat works, and safe. Buy buy buy!!

$1500

Badabump!

haha, in for one of those rims. I know someone missing one! Dont need another beater tho, sorry…

Ugh you cooch! I’ve been looking for a coupe project/beater for close to a year and the second I buy something else this comes up!. Trade for my beater? lol GLWS I want this so bad

It’s so cheap, buy it and drive it half of the time

Does AC work?

No A/C!

Thanks. I have no idea what all that is in there, I fix computers.
Sounds like a good DD for someone and it’s cheap. GLWS

this thing moves out good, probably would keep up with a stock 5.0 (not the new ones the old shit ones), ive never been in this car but been in another car with exactly the same mods

Terry supposedly went 13.9 on the old motor, before it was swapped out for this stock one (with bolt-ons). It won’t go 13.9 now, but it definitely isn’t the slowest thing on the road. It’s not the fastest thing on the road either though

the car i was thinking of was terrys old army green one, unless it got repainted?

That’s this one! Hah.

Good news is I have some interest in the car, but until it actually sells, it’s still for sale!

Tonight, I spent $15 bucks, got some new hardware for the donut gasket, and now it seals up front. There are still a few leaks in the muffler itself, but at least there are no exhaust leaks before that. Before it was right up at the engine. So partial win

Buy buy buy!

i gotta fix my doughnut too =(

SOLD!
