A Torontonian Perspective (on buffalo)

Sorry, try again. I guess I like my wings in hot sauce, not vinagar…

Mass production of the automobile originated in Detroit, by Ford. You wanna say they make the best cars? The origin of a product has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with it’s quality. Maybe when you were working on those two degrees @ UB you should have taken a course in critical thinking, you then would know that your argument was flawed.

Yeah, the Frank’s Red hot that 90% of the places use around here is SOOOOOOO fucking good

Well…when I was in the 2nd grade I had an O in Reading!

Franks is good sauce, but its the base for the best sauce. Franks alonce doesnt make a good wing. Also cooking it is a big deal too, and since your such an expert where are they better?

You are fighting a losing argument on this one.

I’ve been to almost every major city, and currently live in NC, nothing compares to wings in Buffalo.

Please tell me where this far away place with magical chicken wings is?

Buffalo (or we can say WNY) has the potential to be great. But the problem is there are too many obstacles.

I’ve lived here all my life but I’ve travelled to about 13 different states and got a taste of what other areas offered.

Where can you find a house for $100,000 that is almost 2000 sq ft in other major metropolis areas? I watch TLC and Flip this House and see a house that is 1000 sq ft selling for 1.4 million $ and it needs renovation. Plus the architecture of many of the older houses around here is just amazing.

Buffalo is known for its food. We have so many mom and pop places around here that have been around for decades. If their food sucked, they wouldn’t have lasted this long. As for the Buffalo Wing, I honestly don’t care for Anchor Bar (I like Duffs, Brennans, and Buffalo Tap Room), but it’s not called a Buffalo Wing for nothing. We have such a diverse selection of foods to compliment that many cultures of people living here.

And I’ve had wings in almost every state I visited. They all suck compared to here, and they mostly use ranch dressing, not blue cheese :hang:

Schools - Why do you think so many businesses jump at the chance to hire a person that has a degree from a SUNY school? From working at UB for 5 years, and dealing with a lot of the professional staff, and talking with the students, UB is a top notch draw to employers. The number of students increases yearly.

Business - That can be a whole other subject. We shoot ourselves in the foot economically here. We have a waterfront. A Damn waterfront. What is there… NOTHING! Build on it. It seems like local politicians only will let a business come in after they get their pockets filled. I’ve been to (Northeastern)waterfronts in Chicago and Cleveland, we got a lot to learn. But you keep hearing the back and forth discussions and shit never happens.

People are all pissed about the Casino being built at the site of the rotting grain elevator. I’m glad they are building it there. Th grain elevator was only going to rot away since nothing was ever going to get done to it. Plus the city said they couldn’t pay for the cost of demolishing it. The Senecas are paying to demolish it. Maybe business will start growing around it. Or maybe by 2015 Bass Pro will seriously think about coming to Buffalo.

There is a lot of $$$ in WNY. Mostly old money. It’s called old money for a reason, it hardly gets recirculated back into the area. All the McMansions in Clarence, etc that are being built shows that there is money around here.

Buffalo is known for it’s frugal spending. People go out to buy something, they want a deal and are not willing to spend retail on things. I talk to people in other areas and they have no problem with paying a premium on top of the regular price just to get something. Not around here. They want 2 for the price of 1. And they might be happy.

The Peace Bridge - Are we ever going to build another one, and what design will they ever agree on?

But in general, I do like the area. I have a ton of friends in the area, my family and my wifes are both in this area.

The car show scene isn’t sparse at all. I can go to my choice of 2-5 different cruise nights on a different day and 5-15 different car shows on a weekend. So there is no lack for my hobby.

The food is great. I can walk to probably over 20 different restaurants near my house in Kenmore with a 10 minute walk.

Something has to change though. Taxes, lack of new businesses and the incentive for them to come here, and goverment that reaks of corruption is killing us. If I am going to spend the rest of my life here, I think I’m going to have to my part of the kicking and screaming for change until something good comes from it. Or I’ll get fed up enough with it and pack up and move.

(Holy crap, this is my longest reply on this site to date I think.)

I Totally and COMPLETELY agree. This is one of the biggest pile of shit palces I have even been to. Who gives a rats ass about wings. If wings is the only thing a city is known for then thats REALLY pathetic. Buffalo, a city where the fat fucks get fatter and the girls chunk up and become bigger whores. Put that on the Sign by the tolls assholes.

Holy fucking ROFLFLELLELFLEELFLELLFELLFELELEFLFELFLELEFLFL   !1!!!1!1!!1!!!

How am I losing? Just because the majority has a different opinion doesn’t not make my argument wrong. Yet another falicy to believe popular opinion.

1.) You won’t find good wings in a major city.
2.) Any hole in the wall bar, dinner, resturaunt in the Adirondack foothills is proof of that. Hell I’ve even had better wings in Kingston, Brockville and Ottowa.

Good wings have the taste cooked in, not poured on.

Seriously you think you can fry a wing, then pour shit ass Frank’s on it, step back and call it good?

Well, if that is the mentallity then no wonder so many people are sticking up for this sinking pit… and you think that you are right :ham:

well, ill tell you what…ive been here all my life, and i have been to alot of other places on the eastern coast, and once to mexico. my all time favorite city ive seen is charlotte NC, i like the way they took all the old decrepid buildings like we have here in buffalo and refurbished them to like-new and found a new purpose in them, while still retaining their roots. i like the way they have student artwork and sculptures displayed on all the major street corners. i like how clean and new everything feels. people are friendly. If i walk around downtown buffalo, i feel unsafe, like im breathing in the fumes of death, the place is filthy, our entire legislature is crooked, all the money meant for up-keep in this city is spent on people to sit home while getting raises and promotions for sitting on their couch or gambling on the job, the roads are trash to drive on…etc, etc. for the most part the people here ARE friendly, and thats one thing buffalo DOES offer. elmwood ave. is prolly the only decent part of the city with all the amazing family-owned restuarants and such. but this city needs a makeover, something like the ydid in cleveland where an actual decent person stepped up as mayor and started spending money for the right reasons. buffalo DOES suck

/rant

I was thinking of a funny photoshop contest where people take that sign and change it to what it really should say:

Such as:

Welcome to Buffalo
What were you thinking?

obvioulsy, you feel that the your opinion is right and the majority, which I would bet is over 80% must be wrong.

fine, you win. Happy now?

You still haven’t told us where magical chicken wing land is…

This thread is too funny…

Some really good points have been said… But yeah this place really does suck and there is no hope for it…

As people being cheep in Buffalo. I deal with the shit every single day at work, hell people want stuff less then what I buy it for… I think the next time I walk into Sears to buy some tools I’m going to tell the salesman “I’m not going to pay what you have it marked for for. I want it half off”… I deal with these cheep fucking people everyday from this part of the sate…

I would bet that 80% hasn’t a clue. I don’t think my opinion is right, as I usually do not post opinions but rather facts.

By not living down to Buffalo standards I won a long long time ago.

I didn’t … …

When you learn how to read then we can talk about logic, truth tables and constructing arguments based upon factual support and evidence.

I read what you wrote…

I asked for a specific place and you gave me the adirondack foothills.

So thats about a quarter of NYS. Then you mentioned 3 cities in Canada, one of which is a major city, which you yourself said could never be a place to find good wings. Way to contradict yourself.

You are telling me its fact, and not your opinion, that the wings are better in the adirondack foothills and parts of Canada than in Buffalo. Prove it with facts.

I still like my friend’s aunt about NT’s sign

“Does that sign say 'Welcome to North Tonawanda: Home of the caserole?”
“No, carousel…”
“Oh, caserole would work too. Have you seen the people?”

No you did not ask for a specific place, you asked for a magical land.

Sorry, I don’t consider under 1 million people a major city. That’s like saying Buffalo is a major city. But then again by your preception of reality it is.

and again…

Taste is a matter of opinion, can you have an argument about an opinion based on facts? lol

Jeremy have you ever had BarBill wings? they arent like most wings around here.

Audi Sniper, you know I appreciate it greatly any and every time you have helped me out so dont take this the wrong way, but you did have a sig telling people that you would hook them up on ski stuff…

I am glad to see this thread is staying SOMEWHAT mature with valid mostly arguments and not just a collection of people saying its a shithole.

I like to know specifics… what do you find being the biggest issues? what good do you see going on?

I could write a book on all of the good stuff going on in the city in the past couple years and the plans for the years to come. I met with two directors in city hall this week and some of the plans they are working on look great!

I have a 55 page document sitting next to me about mid town and the plans to bring this city neighborhood back to life, and there is already over 30 million in new projects there that will be footing these plans.

There are AMAZING neighborhood associations that are working thier asses off in certain areas like Harvey Garrett and the west side collaborative, The kleinhans community association headed by Chris Brown, etc.

There actually are quite a few programs and grants available to new businesses in the city, as well as people who want to buy and renovate properties, etc. After speaking with Lou Petrucci (Buffalo Director of Housing), he said that some of them have had less than 5 people apply for them in the last two years.

There are some great tax break programs such as the empire zone, some mixed use programs, the 50/50 matching grant program, low interest business loans, etc.

EXACTLY :lol:as I pointed out before…

we are all gonna have to agree to disagree with FGZ (I shortened it cause im not typing it out I like it it may catch on) But you ever watch tv and hear people talking about hooters wings and how great they are? Well all i have to say is yack!

But as far as the city goes, you probably wont find a city that was more thriving than buffalo that came down to such a low how it is now. We have knocked down more amazing buildings from the pan am expo then most cities will ever see.

This was our city, whoever let this go should be shot

Im not a religous guy but look at the basilica (sp?) Fuck man that church is beautiful, and i have been in there with people who have been to the national cathedrial and say that it rivals that. As far as downtown, The central terminal is still one of the most beautiful train stations anywhere and its obviously not in use but if the indians were smart that would be a great casino/hotel. Im pretty sure we have1 maybe 2 frank loyd wright houses in WNY and most cities in america cant say that they have one. It has the framework to be an amazing city but corruption has choked it to near death, hopefully someone will fix it, but it will always be my home.

:tif:

You haven’t had good wings till you marinated the chicken for hours, then grilled it.

everyone fries wings, pours sauce on them… gay.

BTW - I have been to Europe, through Canada, and also all over the US… and I can say Buffalo sucks pretty bad. I used to think living in Akron was sucky, and that it would be better in the city, well the city sucks, and so does everything about it. Areas around the city are getting worse, but hopefully some of the country around the city can stay country till I die at least…

I’m not talking about people on here asking for deals… I have no problem hooking up members of the forums I go on, or friends of mine with equipment… That has nothing to do what I’m saying… I guess you missed my point…
It’s Joe fvcking Blow who comes in my store expecting current equipment to be half off when across the state inn, lets say lake Placid they are getting well over MAP for that same product… And yet another thing that blows my mind is when people come in and say “I have 5 kids I should get a deal on my season rentals”… I feel like telling them to invest in some birth control and tell you husband to keep his dick in his pants if you cant afford having 5 kids… It just blows my mind how cheep people are in this fvcking city… I never hear people bitching about prices when I’m in NYC or Vegas… Hell I never go in a store and fvcking haggle about price… If I cant afford it I dont buy it…

End of Rant…
