I filed already, got both refunds back and then discovered that my old job even tho I stopped when I was done with school still payed me through January in 2008 and received a W2 very late.
It’s a real PITA. I had to do it last year when NYS sent me a 1099 for a tax overpayment credit in mid February.
In last year’s version of turbotax it was pretty much a manual process. The federal form 1040x isn’t that bad, but NY form IT 201X is massive and very complicated.
I have to file an amendment also, my mother thought she could claim me so she told me to file as a dependent. Turns out she can’t, so I’ll be getting another grand or so back. But it takes 10-15 weeks to process the 1040X apparently.
Does anyone know if you just send the 1040X in, or do you send a whole new 1040 form with it?
Hmmm… I will have to look. I thought I tried selecting that and it loads my efiled return and just goes through and displays the status. Doesn’t allow me to change anything.
in turbotax you just modify your return (even though you have filed) and then when you go to file for the second time they tell you what to do since it’s an amended return.
Depends on the amount and the item. toss up the changes (or PM me) and I’ll give you my opinion on whether or not it’s worth it to amend. (public accountant)
ok I realized i forgot to do this and just tried to run a modified return through turbotax. i owe a few hundred back so what are my options? government held onto 2 grand of my money for a year, can I just pay it back next year or do I just have to bite the bullet and refile with the check of the diference?
i would rather have the input of someone who did it before. The 1040x form seems to talk a lot about credits and such. This is a missed income form that I didn’t have on my tax return.
