this sort of thinking is what moved my wife and I into a more rural setting. Our first house was on a 50’ wide lot in a city setting so basically everything you did was more or less in full view of the neighbors.
our current house is on nearly 8 wooded acres on a private lane shared by 4 homes. We are the last house on the lane so we don’t have anyone driving by, but we do have to drive by everyone else. It means no random stops by neighbors, but we do need to wave to a lot of people when the weather is nice on a Saturday afternoon. I avoid stopping to talk at all costs.
also our one damn neighbor insists on plowing our driveway (300’ of it at least) because he says he is doing his anyway and he’d hate for people not to be able to get to our house. I would prefer people not be able to get to our house to be honest. The other neighbor enjoys filling potholes in the private lane…and has tried to get me to do the same because the other 2 will have none of it.
The other 3 have all developed different disputes between them over the years that they seem to think I care about. I think since I’m the “new” guy they think they can gain an advantage over the others if I side with them. It’s great entertainment to hear the same story 3 times with 3 different people being the bad guy.
last summer they were all getting pissy about something or the other and there was talk of creating trouble with the joint maintenance agreement for the lane- basically a couple of them were talking about going to court. I own a 50’ strip of land that goes out to the street and essentially crosses the one court bound neighbors front yard. I just told him if they got something started that dragged us into court I would be installing my own 50’ wide driveway out to the street right through his yard this spring. So far, so good.
the other option is to buy the property behind me that fronts on another street, build a new drive, demolish my old one and tell the other 3 to go fuck themselves. Maybe someday.
So you moved out to the sticks because you wanted nothing to do with people being nosy? And, got the complete opposite.
When you live by the 3 F’s, then opinions shouldn’t matter.
If you’re not feeding, funding, or fucking me, then go fuck off. Unless your neighbors are “the girl next door.”
It probably sounds worse than it is…though the 3 F’s sound like a reasonable starting point for neighborly relations.

Amherst police arrest two for stealing from cars
AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – Police in Amherst arrested two men after they say calls came in complaining about a suspicious car near UB’s campus.
They say students called to complain about an old, red sedan being driven erratically. Students said the driver and passenger were breaking into other cars and stealing from them.
When police responded to the scene they say they chased the sedan and stopped it close to where they they say a series of car larcenies happened. Police say they found marijuana and and a substantial amount of stolen property in the car.
Police say they arrested Matthew Bader and Nicholas Matalonis, two 19-year-old Clarence residents, and charged them with criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful possession of marijuana and traffic infractions.

i walked 1 city block last night to get one of the best chicken souvlakis buffalo has to offer. fuck this area. i want to drive on a 4 lane street to go out to eat!!

this is not because of the rural area, but because you live on a shared lane. my uncle lives on a shared lane that isn’t maintained by the town as well. all homes on the lane split the cost of having the lane plowed, and then each takes care of their own driveway. when it comes to trimming back brush, mowing or filling potholes with stone, they each have a section of the lane they are responsible for. they split it off by dividing where the telephone poles were. has been working well for them. its pretty nice, well over a half mile from the road. nice and quiet.
on a side note, I was out cutting, grinding and welding well into the night on Wednesday with my garage door wide open and the radio cranked. no neighbors came over to tell me I was too loud. so disappointing.
Didn’t feel like going upstairs to take a piss last night, so I didn’t. That in and of itself is worth it.
