giving…me…a…headache…
Ahhh this thread makes me laugh…
I’m going to agree with Hank. I have to for the sheer fact that he’s correct in his statements. There are people who CAN weld, and those that truly know HOW to weld. It’s a very big difference in between the two. The latter does not come cheap, my weld/fab rate is $65 hour and is without a doubt a “get what you pay for” line of work. My rates are not cheap, and neither are Hanks from his posts, but ARE cheap in comparison to what you get in the end.
Not everyone can justify the cost of such welding, but then again it’s those projects that I won’t get tied up into either. I don’t cut/lower my rates because someone “just wants a muffler” welded on, and I wouldn’t expect any other true welding shop to do the same(HNH, Govel, Etc) There are plenty of generic muffler shops out there(Broadway Service) that are more than capable of doing just that within you expected $40 budget.
P.S.as for modern welding BAWAHHHAAAHA!!! if ur looking to take and pass a test go there!! if ur looking how to weld. find a welder to use and old piece of metal. prep it to the best of ur ability. take it and throw that motherfucker across the room!! where ever it lands drag the welder of to it , find the most comfortable postion to weld in with out moving the object 2b welded and weld it!!
wooola. ur learnig a new craft… in the field there is not a nice cozy table , seat and brandy new metal to weld on. in school there is…
And this has to be the greatest description of this line of work ever. People tend to think that welding revolves around a padded seat and bench all day long when in fact I find myself inverted and bent over backwards trying to operate a torch and foot switch while simultaneously ensuring a solid bead(roll cage reference, finger amptrol’s suck ass…). I feel joyous when I get to sit upright and weld without blood pooling in my brain
I think you’re the first person to ever agree with Harold :lol
But you guys do have a very good point. There is a difference between getting the job done, and getting the job done right.
WOW !! LOOK SUMONE , WHO DOESN"T THINK I"M AN ASSHOLE TOO…
the simple point is i could weld ur muffler on fot 10$ 20$ 30$ etc. but i wouldn’t want my name attached to shit job!!! and i DON"T do shit work.
this first time i do a shitty job, a customer with higher standards would see that and be like i’d never let that ASSHOLE. weld my shit…
i can also control mu labor rate and be more competitive cuz i dont have a HUGE of head!!!
boxer i feel ur pain brother god how i long for those nice jobs that u hardly ever get were u can sit at the bench for hours and tig away!!! it’s nice to have fantasies thou…
I agree with Hank. His name is going to get brought up when ppl look at his work, so why do a crummy job? who wants people thinking u mangle things when u weld? Not something u want synonymous with your name. If you have a welder and can just kinda cobb job it, go ahead and take the 40 bucks, but if its your job and you have a reputation that makes ur business look good then why would he wana take that 40 bucks and kinda stick it on in 5 minutes? I can prolly weld something to something, but its goin to sit crooked and the beads are goin to end up looking like bird shit. i say you find a person that does good work and just pay him what it costs. I had my exhaust built at Inline. I told Dave that he can take whatever time he needs to do it. Yes, I got a great rate, but the fact remains that the welds came out nice and he did a great job overall. i found out that you really get what u pay for in this country. now, im not saying go spend 500 bucks to get ur muffler resituated, but get it done right as it needs to be not as whatever it ends up being.
Hanks as honorable as they come and offers a kick ass job… if hes unsure, he will tell you…if he’s confident, he will tell you. What I will tell you, is that he’s fair. Period.
As for Adam, well, heel, I just booked him to do my M3 cage today, strickly do to experience in the industry. Either one of these guys should be considered for any easy or technical weld job. I tried to weld some things on my car…notice I say “tried”. It “stuck”, but I know now that strength, and “sticking” are two totally different animals.
Hey, mufflers…it can’t suck more…rust…grinding…all that fun… take it to Midas or Broadway or wherever…$40 will come close!
Y THANK U SIR!!!
i 'll have a nice cage for all ur viewing pleasure in about 2 weeks!!!
the jeep will be leaving the building tomorrow on her maiden voyage!!
SO NOW IT’S TIME FOR DADDY’S BIG PROJECT!!!
no more resto’s till mine’s done now!! :
How did the welding dillema work out for you in the end?
im trying my hand welding here at the shop…im not asking for your family secrets here but any tips guys
u find the switch that makes the light c’mon. and then weld. :lol
but make sure u turn shield gas on!!! :nod
and it’s exhaust so weld it down hand!!! no need to blow thru it on the first shot!
Vlad and I seem to know the same welders… not too bad if I say so myself. :drink
can i post some pics of my ATTEMPTS at welding and not hear asshole comments from random people???
no ;D
actually my buddy dave at the shop says for my secound day im not doing terrible…ill take some pics tomarrow and post them tomarrow night
i dont know abut random peeps. but ur def. gonna get sum asshole comments!!! :crackup
i bet there compareable to my nine year olds welds!!! :haha
:crackup yessir… and i mean you wouldn’t keep your award if no one said anything :haha
yea yea im sure you will actually be surprised wether anyone will complement me or not
If it looks like a bird turd, I will say that and no more, but hell if its a weld and it holds better than some of the weld-like-solder jobs I’ve seen first timers do, then its all good.
not at all actually
