Armed Guard

Anyone know the requirements?

Seem to find a range of classes and certifications to become a licensed security guard in NY state but cant seem to determine if I need to file a pistol permit license myself and then take the class or is it an all in one class or do i need to start at the bottom with a basic security certification and pistol permit and move up.

Pistol permit is a separate class from the class you take for a NYS guard license. I have yet to see both offered at the same time since both are about 8 hours in length individually.

Does a pistol permit class allow you to file for a permit in NYS or is it like drivers ed and allow you to speed through to process of filing the paper work than someone off the street wanting a pistol permit.

hmm boxxa is on to something

to be armed guard you have to be certified by county and state to carry a weapon. You need more than just a pistol permit, you need an unrestricted carry permit. First you need to take a 48 hr course and pass a state and county certification test at the shooting range as well as a written test. Then when this is all complete you take an 8hr security guard course and mail in all the certifications to albany and recieve an armed security license. Your better off getting just the security license, theres plenty of jobs that dont require a firearm. Then apply for a pistol permit, and upgrade to armed security license down the line.

you need the 8 hr class just to own a firearm, you need the 48hr and certifications to carry a firearm.

truth.

plus AFAIK, armed positions arent paying THAT much more than non-armed so its kind of a waste to get the armed.

Yes … a full carry permit AND a $9hr job …Woo Hoo

Its actually a full time job that is recommended you carry a weapon. This isn’t for a guard-the-mall type position that someone is going overboard with. Its a high security job.

It is in a different state but I have heard that NY is one of the tougher states to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon and its easier to transfer it to a different state than going somewhere and starting new.

So the general census is that I need to take the 8 hour class to own a handgun?

After that I need to take a 48 hour class that allows me to carry it in public?

Finally I need a security license (that typical one that bar security and casino security guards have)?

Lastly, is there a upgrade to the security license that allows you to carry a weapon on the job or is it your own choice once you pass the 48 hour class?

are you attempting to get this permit in Erie county ??

lol all this for a rent a cop job!!!

YAY!!

And erie county is one of the toughest places to get a permit

That is another question. My permanent mailing address is in Monroe county and have connections with the county there but live in Buffalo so I am debating which would be best to start this.

Not really. Its a full time position that requires a degree and does require you to go onto the floor so its suggested you carry a weapon if certain situations arise. Like I said, its not a rent-a-cop/mall security position.

join the army

way more fun :stuck_out_tongue:

you dont take an 8 hr course then a 48hr course. You want a unrestricted permit. You have to take a 48hr course with certifications at the end. If the job is in a different state, then use your said connections, get an unrestricted carry permit in Monroe county and try and transfer it out of state. If you have no permit though and plan on moving, it would prolly just be easier and cheaper to start the paperwork for the security license and pistol permit where the said job is. Who knows, it could be way easier. Some states will give a handgun to anyone with a clean drivers license.

what company is it for?
