Where do you find a doctor that specializes in athletes?

I thought they were called Sports Medicine primary care doctors.
So I call up an office (Dr. John Leddy/Scott Darling) and this wonderful lady named Meg tells me they are not orthopedic surgeons they are orthopedic doctors. I say ok, I’m looking for a new General Practitioner. She responds saying these are Orthopedic doctors.
I ask her, if they are Sports medicine primary care doctors… She asks me where I found that, I said online on their website. Then responds saying that they are Orthopedic doctors not surgeons. So I said oh ok thanks bye.

So what am I actually looking for?

My last dr. visit the nurse said I’m becoming dangerously overweight :expressionless:

why do you need an sports medicine doctor again? if you’re over weight you need to discipline yourself with your eating habits and get your but moving to accelerate your heart rate. A sports medicine doctor isn’t needed for this.

I’m a bodybuilder.

im confused, are you grossly overweight or a bodybuilder? Ive been to DR Leddy and he was alright. no complaints. But I could have swarn he did orthopeodic surgery.

I’m 6’ 192lbs. ~9-10% BF. Can see abs without pump/flex, but cannot see glute striations. I fall into overweight BMI category. Plan on competing NPC in 2015
Current Dr. is very impatient, and knows nothing of bodybuilding. my liver enzymes are elevated and I’d like to know why, current Dr. offers no solutions. I asked him if it could be from mercury in Tuna, and he tells me to “stop grasping” and that there is no evidence to show tuna contains mercury. I eat 12oz/week + Tilapia (6oz is the recommend max for tuna). He said to get rechecked in 4 months and come back and see him.

He’s just plain rude tbh. He has 2.5/5 on healthgrades.com on 20 reviews and 1.5/4 on another site. The only reason he is a 2.5 is because he recived good marks for office cleanliness and staff, everything about him is a 1-2.

Find another Dr who doesn’t treat you like an idiot?
My BMI makes me overweight as well and its never come up during a Dr visit.
Tuna straight from the can?

Yeah, but I’d prefer a doctor who knows a thing or two about athletes. Not just sign up at random for a guy and hope he knows.
I think it came up because my weight has been going up, I’m up from 166 less than a year ago. Been on a lean bulk at .5lb/wk. Trying to get to 230 before competitions, but I don’t think I’ll make it there in time for next year. I was actually smiling pretty big when she said I was up from 166. I’m pretty damn proud. ~25lbs of LBM in 45 weeks is good work.

Depends on what the meal plan for the day is. I used to sometimes eat tuna from the can when it was sold in olive oil + peppers. It was a bit more expensive (1.98/can) but I can’t find it now.
Now I usually just mix it up with full fat mayo and 2 slices of Ezekiel bread. I’ve been wanting to try P28 bread, but can’t find it local. It says Wegmans carries it, but I can’t find it there. Tuna is a nice break from chicken.

wait a sec, 6’ 192lbs is overweight? WTF? I have a few powerlifting buddies I’ll ask where they go.

Try to find someone that is friends with a bills or sabre. I would think someone on here has to be friends with one and find out who they use. I just went for an orientation with a chiropractor/ muscle dr who has a wall and website full of bills players. He’s kind of expensive and insurance doesn’t cover but he must be decent if they are all his patients.
Hope that helps

Yep, once you’re 6’ and over 180lbs it’s considered overweight. Thanks
That’s all according to BMI…

Thanks, this is what I first thought! UB Sports Med seemed like the obvious choice. That led me to Drs Leddy and Darling… Where their secretary/receptionist turned me away with a very confusing answer. I still don’t know why she told me that, I wasn’t asking if they were surgeons. I cleared said I was looking for a Primary care Physician.

Maybe I’ll ask my chiro, he said he works with quite a few bodybuilders.

ahhhhh, sarcasm. ok, I see now. Whats funny is how everyone I know is trying to gain weight and im the only one I know cutting. the last 8weeks ive dropped 20lbs to a 186lbs right now while maintaining most of my strength and energy. another 5-6 lbs and ill be right where I want to start competing. So at 186lbs @5’9 im considered to be grossly overweight however I have muscle striations throughout my body. General practitioners don’t understand body building. Ask your gym trainers who they could recommend. Its kinda there job to know this stuff.

all that aside, 25lbs of LBM in 45weeks? naturally? you must have great genetics. lol anyway, I always loved Arnolds Double protein bread. you can find it at wallmart with a host of many different Arnolds breads. I usually treat myself to salmon 1-2x a week. The rest of the week is eggs, whites, oatmeal, green carbs, plenty of whey. I avoid breads as much as possible, but then again I never had a problem gaining weight. its losing it.

I refuse to see my primary, he blows hard and I always get stuck with his bitchy assistant although cute, but still a huge bitch. So I research my ailments, and I go right to the specialist. I don’t need my primary getting my copays to send me somewhere else to pay more copays. But years ago when I tore my shoulder up, dr leddy did a good job getting me back on track.

funny fact, Arnold swarzenegger had a BMI of 35 while his rein of MR Olympia. I guess Arnold was obese. lol

An orthopedic doctor may not be the one that operates on you but he’s still going to be dealing with muscle and joint issues. Not the guy you call because your cholesterol is high or you have strep throat. A decent general practitioner/primary care doctor who treats some young people/athletes should be fine. My primary has handled gym related stuff with me and even flagged a serious problem in my knee that I had no idea about because looking at it offhand he saw swelling in one knee. I’m with turbociv on asking the gym trainers or even people you workout with.

Hmm, is Arnold’s bread in the regular bread section? I’ve never seen it there before. 5’9-10" seems to be the ideal BB height. Most Olympia winners are right at that. 6’ is nice and all, but at 192 I look very skinny… No where ready to compete. If I drop an extra 5% BF, I’ll probably look even worse.

Right on about people not cutting this year, I’m not sure why. I think most people are just taking a break from the bulk/cut cycle. I try to stay lean year round, I don’t want to make it hell on myself when I do end up having to cut. I’m a returning BB’er, so a lot of those gains are just returning mass. The real grind is going to be 200 and up I think.
I think all Mr. Olympia winners are obese. I’d like to see a doctor tell them that

Yeah, but I’m just confused because what is a sports med primary care doctor then? Why the Primary Care? Isn’t that what a General Practitioner is?

I even send UB Ortho an email asking if they offer any General Practitioners… and I got responded with…

You can find a full listing of our providers on our website: http://www.ubortho.com/

Our Sports Medicine Primary Care Physicians are: Drs. Scott Darling, Rajiv Jain and John Leddy.

Thank you,

Tyia Palmer, MBA
Call Center Manager"

I probably will just end up asking them.
I go there at 3am though, no trainers there then (or anyone else for that matter). Maybe I’ll call them up ;\

Arnold bread is in the bread section. Most grocery chains carry it but ive only found the double protein bread at larger walmarts/grocery stores. I personally get my bread from walmart on losson/transit. however since cutting ive cut most bad carbs out except for maybe a cheat day on the weekend. imho bread carbs are bad carbs.

I’m about 6’ and sit around 195. Working on some (non-serious) bodybuilding now, so I guess I’m a big fat ass.

Body Building is still relatively “new”. I think people are really starting to realize “Hey I can compete too if I put in the time, effort, and discipline”. Arnold was a beast, he said while shooting and training for the role of Conan, he decided about 8 weeks out that he would compete again in the Mr. Olympia competition…and won.

BMI is a crock of shit for anyone with a decent amount of muscle. Personally, I think it’s useless in general. Doesn’t take into account frame size, body fat%, basically anything.

BMI is like the food pyramid and most anything else go-mint agencies put out…all canned, flawed bullshit advice.

I’m not a doctor but I’m going to just go out here and guess you’re consuming methylated oral steroids or pro-hormones.

Dr. Hartrich is the Sabres team doctor and personal doctor/pediatrician. I don’t think he is taking anymore patients currently though. I am going to talk to him today and I’ll see what’s up.

I wish I could get a 1/4 of your gains in a year! Sucks being a hard gainer.
