When the next generation Audi S4 makes its expected debut sometime in 2009 as a 2010 model, it will lose its snarling V8 for a more fuel-efficient forced induction V6, like the previous-generation, B7-chassis car. While such a move was foreseen, more specifics have a supercharged or maybe even twin-charged version of the optional direct-injection 3.0 liter V6 in the current B9 A4 powering all four wheels.
Peak power is expected to be in the vicinity of the current 4.2 liter V8’s 340hp, with little, if any, downsides, apart maybe from the lack of that V8 exhaust noise. Lag and a lack of torque should not be factors thanks to an efficient supercharger and the use of direct injection. If anything, the technologically advanced engine could prove to be more flexible than the V8. Some sources believe the car may be twin-charged, utilizing a supercharger and a turbocharger like VW’s 1.4-liter TSI engine in the European Golf GT, but due to the cost and complexity of such a set-up, we’re doubtful it would see production.
No matter how the new engine will breathe, it will work easier as the B9 A4 body is about 100lbs lighter than the outgoing model and the two will share body panels. An active differential that distributes power on demand between wheels on the same axle is also expected to be part of the package to help the all-wheel driver handle like a rear-wheel drive vehicle.
Audi’s move back to forced induction is in tune with a recent prediction turbocharged gasoline engines will double by 2013 on account of the gas savings they offer.
Look for the S4 to be unveiled later this year, possibly in November, with more details on the engine here soon.
Personally I’m really hoping they do. The V8 is nice, but the boosted 6 is much more tunable and fun. What say you, masses?
