redline gsr has a good bike to start off on
he wants to much
I picked up a Savage to start on. It would be much too small for your size, but it fits me perfectly. I’m finishing up the MSF course this week and hope to get some miles on it before the end of the summer.
FWIW, I picked it up for $1600 for a 2000 model w/ 7k miles.
I will probably let my gf inherit the Savage when I want to get something different. I’m looking at the Suzuki GS500E because it’s smaller than most sporty bikes and has a nice upright seating position. There is one for sale on craigslist right now for $1200 with only 4500 miles: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/87070709.html
i always go high that way i usually get wat i really want from the lowballers
i listed for 3500 and probably selling it this saturday for alot less
i was just busting quiks ball on his chin!nothing tolds u!
As far as gear goes…Joe Rocket Jackets I find are the best. They are most breathable durning summer months (If your not a crazy ass riding in shorts and a white tshirt) I have only worn HJC Helmets…
Any bike that you don’t twist the hell out of the throttle is a good starter bike. If you don’t trust yourself, stay away from power. If you are responsible, you can start on anything. Anyone here name a 600 that you can’t stand straight up if you rip it.
Don;t rule out fieldsheer either. I have one of their Mach 4 jacket which is amored jacked with their removable armor system. The jacket is poly mesh except for the impact and armor points are all leather. Very good stiching to hold it on. The mesh feels to be tripleply (3 layers) but boy does it breath. I’m always hot, so during these 90+ degree days I actually don’t mind wearing it. It has pleanty of adjustment straps as well.
Only thing I suggest is no matter what kind of jacket you get try it on first. There is too much of a difference in sizes. Christ I had to get a 5xl jacket and I usually only wear a 2xl or 3xl depening on how the shoulders are cut.
First bike, buy something you don’t mind dropping.
Depending on what style you like, used of course:
large guys,
cruiser: shadow 750, HD 883 or 1000 ironhead sportster, vulcan 800
sportbike: any of the 600 CC sportbikes (katana, gsxr, etc.)
You big guys will look like a cherry tomato on a toothpick on any of the following bikes. For regular and smaller guys,
cruiser: rebel, 883 HD sportster
standard: GS500 (this seems to be the best deal, around 1000 used and when you gain confidence this bike will keep you happy for a while)
sportbike: Any of the 250 sportbikes would do fine, but don’t hesitate to buy a 600 cc if you have self-control.
And, as some previously mentioned,
- Take the MSF safety class.
- A full face helmet.
- A “First Gear” jacket (good compromise of price and function).
- kevlar threaded jeans (worth every penny if you meet pavement).
- high quality gloves, preferably with gel inserts.
Well, I’m a beginner, and I just bought my first bike earlier this week.
It’s a 1988 Honda Hawk GT 650. I’m happy with it, it’s light, pretty quick, and looks kind of modern considering it’s age.
Congrats, those are awesome bikes, fairly rare too. post pics if you can
