Best 240sx year for sr20det swap?

Hey all,

I’m planning on getting a 240 and I remember reading that certain years are more tricky to swap in a sr20det which I plan to do in the distant future. I forgot what year would be more tricky and which would be most preferable.

This dude I know is selling a 90 240sx and I was wondering am I missing out anything if I purchase the 90 model rather than the earlier ones? I’m also interested in wondering if I would be missing anything in regards to if i ever decide to get into drifting with the 90 240sx since it doesn’t have VLSD i believe.

get a '97 or '98, then you won’t have anything to worry about.

If you are going to get an s13, go for a 91-93, but be sure and get a coupe!

IBTL-haha

even if it’s a 90 you can just swap in a VLSD or a clutch-type… it’s no big deal.

by the looks of things, you are looking to buy an old car, swap in a fast motor, and dont know how much things are going to cost.

Maybe you should look at a newer 240, and hold off on the sr swap and learn how the real world driving alone really is.

No offence, but its not teh best idea to jump in a fast car when you just got your g2…

i waited a long time to get my car, and my plans are big. just take your time, do things right, and dont screw yourself over with debts, tickets, and accidents.

take it easy

bero: I agree completely with what you are saying. What I am actually intending on doing is just purchasing a first car that in the distant future I can maybe upgrade a little. I really have no plans to upgrade the car for several years but I would just like something to get as my first car that in the future if i ever decide to mod it I can work on it rather than buying for example a corolla and then in the future having to buy a whole new car if i ever got the cash and or opportunity to mod it.

So with that in mind would you guys recommend getting a 240sx as a first car? I wouldn’t really mod it for a long time due to cash issues but rather it would just be my first car to get used to driving by myself and everything like that. Maybe in the future I would modify it but in reality i can’t afford to do that any time soon due to other expenses such as university and insurance.

240s are NOT cheap to insure. Lemme just start with that… Otherwise, they’re fairly reliable. Not the most reliable car out there, but still fairly reliable. I just happen to be in love with how the S13 hatch looks… that’s why I bought my car.

btw if you’re new to driving i’d be careful with 240’s in the winter… they can be a handful for people who don’t know what they’re doing…

I got a Neon as a first car. It is an automatic 4 door family car and i love it to death (never had any issues). First year i had it I drove it everyday from down town Toronto to Scarborough. After the first year, i was ready to buy a car for ME, a car that looked good, was fairly reliable, was 5 spd, RWD and had a nice sporty look to it, I fell in love with the S13 hatch. Then we moved to Mississauga and it has been one year of driving it everyday to scarborough right through the 401 traffic. Finally i had the money and i decided it was time to buy my S13. It took 4 months of searching and patience before i found her.

^^^ I’m with him, with the added RWD

Ok,

So you guys would recommend me getting a more reliable car such as a honda civic (eg 1992 or so) with manual instead of buying a 240sx as my first car?

had a kid that was telling me about his first car, 17 lived in toronto, car under his name… 87 na rx7 $6000/year 240 or GSR $7500 year… just so your aware… as a first car unless you like having no money… get a domestic compact like a focus/escort or an older compact like a 323 or even an AE86 if you can fine one… The thing about those is that not many tunners get them becue they are not an ‘easy tune car’ the excort and 323 can be modified with a JDm 323GT-R/X model and you’ll get a nice AWD with 215hp 1.8L turbo. and these are direct drop in mods. the AE86… well I’ve got a book as thick as a thumb with tunning parts for it… hell go back even further into the mid 80’s and find a nice ford EXP, or LN7 sleeper turbocharged hell. alone those lines chrysler had the dodge colt which was a toned down EVO I, there was the daytona turbo the GM sunbird GT with a T25 all mid to early 80’s that are super cheap to insure… go back into the 70’s where your laughting on things like emissions and such and your into datsun 510’s, rwd Corollas and celica’s even a nice BMW 2002… If you want to make a cool move find a J1 or R1 GLI/GTI … allot of the SOHC 1.8L engines can get into the 10’s with the right cam… beef enignes…

Just out of curiosity, which year of colt is that? Cause I’m looking for a winter beater, and I saw a couple of dodge colts in my price range

I was actually thinking about getting a 323 but I wanted to get an AWD version and i think those are only specific years.

just buy a car that you can enjoy and at the same time afford… you don’t need to come to us for help with these things, really. it’s about your tastes, not ours.

323 GTX’s are near impossible to find and when they do pop up they go for like $7g’s.

maybe its because in 1988(?) they only imported 400 of them and they rot faster than the base 323

I think I know someone selling one with a jap-spec for 6000 or so
GTX I mean

you can get a JDM version or you can get a clip and rear end … lots of ways to get the parts… and you don’t need to use a 323 ONLY the 91–02’ secorts and the zx2 will ALL take the driveline with the zx2 only needing some mount mods for the 1.8L even the 1.8L protege’ will work…
