I bought an acoustic electric guitar back when I was 16 and haven’t played it since I was 17. Im now going to be turning 22 in February and would really like to pick it back up again. Im not able to dedicate a certain time every “x” day to a teacher and Ive always liked teaching myself things so…What is the best Book/CD that I can get to teach myself how to play guitar?
its very difficult to teach yourself from scratch. There are some basics that just can’t be conveyed on a page or a CD/tape.
When i bought my first guitar, it came with a tape to teach yourself…and everytime i tried to go along with it i got discouraged because what i was doing sounded NOTHING like what the guy on the tape was doing.
I took lessons for about 6 months and quit…long enough to learn how to read tabliture, and how to play by ear. then i kept going from there on my own.
so at this point, your actually better off getting a friend that plays to show you a few things before you go and grab a book to start learning
matter of fact, what i have always enjoyed for learning purposes is to choose a song that i would like to learn to play, and search for the tabliture online and then learn the song to play along with it. once completed pick a new song. before you know it you will pick up on the techniques that come from all your favorite songs and it will start to come to you…
I taught myself from scratch…its not that hard. do you have ANY musical background at all? even if you have a little bit, it makes it easier.
EDIT: this is the book I used, but i never really made it through the whole book…
I kinda got the basics down, learned to read Tab and then just kinda went at it on my own. I also played in band in school and knew a lot about music before like how chords were constructed, scales, that sort of stuff. I never bothered to learn to read music for guitar really well (I can read music though) and it never really hurt me too bad because almost everything you would want to play can be found in Tab somewhere.
Good luck with it, it takes a lot of time, but once you start picking up the basics you’ll get the hang of it, its just not an overnight thing like a lot of people think. I’ve been playing since I was 13, and I’m 21 now and I am STILL learning new stuff everyday. You dont really HAVE to play everyday, but in the beginning it helps, even if its only for a few minutes. I play almost every day because its something I really enjoy and I really want to do, so I make time for it. Some people relax by laying on the couch and watching TV, I relax by playing guitar. If I dont play something perfect, I usually dont let it get to me because I’m just in my room, not in front of thousands of people on a stage. Just have fun with it!
get familiar with the guitar, learn the basic cords and what not then just put the cd you want to learn in and teach your self. Its the best way, that is the least frustrating. If you get stuck just look up the tabs for it.mxtabs.net is a good site that helped me when i first started.
The biggest mistake you can make starting out is trying to play songs instead of trying to play music. Stay away from playing tab, notes, , ect., Learn the fundamentals, this book has the fundamentals…
