I need to clean old oil off a brand new rubber gasket. What kind of cleaner should i use to do this. Reason asking is i forgot to put RTV on the mating surface before installing now i have oil all over the gasket.
Isopropyl alcohol
Your kidding me right that will dry out the gasket
You can put seafoam in your engine and the gaskets won’t dry up.
What kind of gasket?
Goes on a sensor on bottom of oil pan
Just need the gasket clean enough for RTV sealant to stick to it
Fool.
Anyway, if it’s a rubber gasket, it probably does not need RTV-just lube it with DC4 or Vasoline
Just read to clean it with dish soap… gunna try that then report back
Brake clean also works , but other than the edges of a joint no reason to use silicone on it unless ya using as a glue .
i making sure this leak stops for good
Loctite 515
Danny :rofl
Ive always been told that Vaseline will break down rubber gaskets over time and should use a silicone based lubricant.
RTV on a flat surface rubber gasket is going to be prone to leaking. Should only be used in sharp corners as suggested. On flat gasket and orings, use either Hylomar or Curil-T non hardening sealants to actually bond the gasket to the parts to be sealed.
Most agressive cleaners cause rubber to swell. Viton is immune. Use warm water and dish detergent to properly clean a rubber gasket that must be reused. Rinse and pat dry(NEVER pull a thing rubber gasket/oring through a towel to dry…you will stretch it).
I do this all the time, shit! I’m doing it wrong.
I swear dish soap is the best all around cleaner of anything greasy or oily :lol Fuck all the name brand purpose cleaners, just use dish soap
QFT
Just buy a new sensor, a new gasket, a tube of 515 and install without over tightening.
/thread.
You do realize loctite makes more than just thread locker right?
yes i know this its just what he has been saying ever since i posted this on here and on another forum.
