best way to strip rubberized undercoating?

i picked up a skid plate yesterday that the previous owner had coated with rubberized undercoat, i already got the flaking rust off of the skid but i want to get all of the undercoating off and just paint it for rust prevention, in the past i’ve used wd-40 and a scoth brite pad to remove baked on oil and similar residue, i was just wondering if anyone on here knows of a better way to get the stuff off?

knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder. Resparator is a must becasue you will burn it more or less along the way grinding it off. Knotted wheel will rip a finger off (so wear some MIG welding gloves too) and will eat right through undercoating, seam sealer, etc. the normal straight bristle wire wheels wont touch the shit.

i think i have a few knotted wheels kicking around too, hopefully i have one thats on its last leg that i can use up on the skid instead of contaminating a good one.

Best way, or easiest way without specialized equipment :wink: best way is to freeze it with co2 and shatter it right off. You can use dry ice but it’s difficult unless the car is on a rotisserie(work great for floorboard interiors though :slight_smile: ) Large flat areas you can use heat and a scraper but it still leaves behind a gummy residue.

I found that an air chissle with a wide flat sharp blade works TITS on oem sound deadner. That stuff is brittle enough on most cars that it just plows through and chips it off more or less. reall fast. Like on daves eclipse removing it to put the floor plates on for the cage… 5 minutes and I removed about 10 square feet of the shit from the 6 points.

Like adam said freeze it and it cracks right off. In a pinch for small ammounts, the can’d air from Office Max you use to blow computers and shit out, flip it upside down and shoot it out. Sometimes you can find the cans cheap as shit. if you dont have a c02 tank.
