Western Digital and Seagate are legit. STAY AWAY from Maxtor.
Maxtor is owned by Seagate…but yeah nothing but bad things with them.
i own a PC repair shop, and we have had nothing but trouble with seagate drives lately. it all went down hill with the 7200.11 series and their firmware issues. Now the 7200.12’s are just as bad, but they get bad sectors about 25% of the time, then i have to return them to seagate for warranty repair. I used to be a seagate guy, and that’s all i would buy, but they lost my business… IMO stick with western digital.
BUMP — I have narrowed my hard drive selection down; need pros and cons and ultimately a decision. I have read all of the comments, thank you everyone for the feedback!

Transcend 500GB USB 2.0 Store Jet 25 Portable External Hard Drive (TS500GSJ25M) — recommended by an family friend in IT; says the quality of the build is superb, and the casing is very strong.

internal but this is the hard drive deal of the day. you can buy an enclosure for cheap:
Forgive me because I am not familiar with custom work on PC’s; but are you saying that I could essentially make that internal hard drive an external? By what means does it connect? Nice find though.
I’ll pay slightly more the few occasions that newegg has higher prices just so I can get their customer service. Newegg > *
yes. an external hard drive is just an internal hard drive in a case with a power supply and USB (or other) out. take your pick of enclosures, they’re like $10 on average.
but if you’re worried this is sounding complex then just pay more and buy an external that’s ready to plug and play.
You’ll probably pay slightly less for an internal drive/enclosure than just an out of the box external. If you aren’t comfortable putting an internal into an enclosure or can’t be bothered with it, an external might be a better option. Hard drives are kinda hit or miss, Seagate does offer the 5 year warranty on most, but I’ve been hearing good things about the WD quality as of late. I have 3 WD externals that are still running and my Seagate Freeagent Go that runs fine, and is about the size of a wallet.
I agree, I have had a WD 250GB since Fall 2006, and it has never gave out on me once. Portability is a plus, so that is why I am considering these other brands (including Seagate, Transcend…) I just have to decide between compact/portability and storage capacity.

Screw it, I chose storage capacity — 1TB WD for $87; no tax no shipping. Thank you everyone for your input!
I just got my 2 WD caviar black drives from tigerdirect. Came in 3 days not bad at all. We’ll see how they do. About $15 more than the blue or green…
newegg? That is a pretty solid deal!
Not Newegg, it was another website: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?omid=103&ref=froogle&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=WDBAAU0010HBK&sku=WDBAAU0010HBK
