umm it has to do, that he is only touching up 1 wheel… so it wont match the other 3…
ive seen a bunch of different variations of “black chrome” and the temps its applied at etc will cause it to appear more black… so unless you do all 4 wheels at the same time, you wont have an easy time of not having the wheels match…
i would definetly @ least do 2 on one side… since you cant see both sides of the car at the same time, it wont be THAT far off to notice when walking from side to side in differant lighting conditions
EDIT: the way i read the post, it seemed as if he was looking to touch up one wheel… not re coat all 4…
Yeah all the rims have slight marks or minor rash.
The rims are currenlty silver and the picture posted is a guy that had the same car as mine with wheels powdercoated black chrome.
Yeah my only issue is that I don’t have a spare set of rims.
So I need to find a place in Buffalo or Detroit that can do it when I take a 3 or 4 day weekend. Perferrably Buffalo so I can borrow a family car.
the problem is… you are going to need to get them blasted while you wait (suzuki) and then powdered next day…
Ive used the PC audios recomended in buffalo… he did next day turnaround for me… i cant thing of the # though, but search for Powder coater on nyspeed and look for his recomendation
havn’t heard of anyone locally that does real black chrome, but i can tell you it looks awesome. powdercoating, even if it is “black chrome” will not look like real black chrome, but gloss black PC can look great. i know 3 sets of wheels done in sun dur’s (type of powder) black and they looked great, but it was a thicker almost orange peel look, not like alot of PC that often has a thin gold flaked look to it.
^ true. Powder “black chrome” is kind of hit or miss. It will not look like real black chrome and getting close is tough. I would NOT trust any powder coating shop that says “we can do it” unless they have done dozens of sets before. Its almost a art to get that shit looking right. Little variations in surface prep, oven time, temp, thickness, will make or break the results. Powder coating reflective finishes is VERY hard to do.
Send it to a place that has solid experience SPECIFICALLY with that finish… and I would ask for a sample.
BTW: there are may variations of that finish based on the powder supplier. They will not look the same.
I remember I found a place in california that would charge 100 per wheel to rechrome your wheels if you did all of the prep work: remove all paint/chrome/nickel/copper/powder coat and polish if necessary. Otherwise it was 400 per wheel(yeow). I don’t recall anywhere in the upstate area that could do this.
“Black Chrome” is actually a plating and is usually applied over a nickel finish instead of the clear chromate on “chrome” pieces. If your wheels are currently painted or powder coated, consider yourself in luck, removing chromate, nickel and copper requires a lot of chemicals and time.
If your wheels are painted/pc’d strip it off yourself with oven cleaner or aircraft paint stripper and polish them up to a mirror finish. Any work you do yourself will lower the price you’ll have to pay the plater.
I’ll look into some platers in the area but I doubt I’ll find any, our market is too small. You’ll most likely have to ship.
