Anyway, I ended up blowing one of the two turbos on Friday or Saturday. I noticed I was down on power on the way home Friday. My wife confirmed it Saturday morning as she was on a Tim Hortons run. She came back, mentioned the lack of power, and the dentist drill noise, and surmised that one of the turbos was toast. Funny though, since one of her first comments was “well, at least now you can make it fast.”
Replacing a pair of turbos in one of these is tough at best, and requires engine removal.
So, I came into the shop on Sunday and plucked the motor.
Anyway, here are some poor phone pics along the way.
Starting with:
So, considering I wasn’t planning on touching internals, I decided against anything crazy, so stepped up from the K03’s to K04’s that were originally found in the Euro-only Audi RS4.
So, had turbos and related hardware in hand on Wednesday afternoon. Car was up and running Thursday morning, and reflashed at noon.
Goes pretty well now. I’m still on stock injectors, intercoolers and fuel pump, so currently have boost turned down to about 19psi so as not to max out the stock injectors. I would estimate about 400 or so at the crank with torque to match, torque peaking at around 2300.
Once I get fueling and intercoolers, the car should be right at the 500/500 mark, and I’ll be really happy with it.
It goes pretty well considering that it’s 4100lbs, dry.
I ran it at Lancaster a couple of times last year. Obviously had the factory turbos on it at the time, plus software and modded downpipes. I think the best run that day was a 9.21/78
Well at least now I know what you have been up to and why you haven’t returned my call. lol
I am just trying to make my car half fast instead of half assed. lol
If you are going to be around this afternoon let me know so I can check this beast out.
Holy God that thing is surprisingly quick!!! It just keeps pulling more and more.
My car is now faster than ever too, unfortunately no where near the speed of Jason’s.
Glad we were able to nail your issue quick-like today, despite my distractions. FWIW, I was able to make everything right.
Pauly…srsly, come by and we need to go for a ride. I’m gone all next week. Anytime after.
I seriously tried to get a set of them from the importer (Jonathan), and they were on backorder. I ended up getting these from Brian at Avalon in Denver. He did an AMAZING job of getting me everything I needed in 2 days time.
I’m likely going to go meth, especially after driving Matt’s freakish beast.
