I think it has more to do with Nintendos marketing. If you remember back a few years ago it was the same deal with gameboys. Then the wii came around and there was thousands of gameboys to be had.
I believe, their thinking is this,
“If we keep production low, but keep introing new accessories & games, then the public will see this as a must have, therefore we can control our own supply and demand, without the market controlling us.”
But then agian I’m just a dumb electrician, so what do I know?
