BMW's

What do i look out for with mileage on these cars. I am looking at 5 and 7 series.

how is service costs on these. Seems like a 97-99 can be had from 8 to 11k. depending on mileage. Its over 100k miles somethign to run away from?

I am just looking!

ya, avoid them unless you have money to burn on maintenance, a 3-series would be a better alternative, check out www.bimmerforums.com

3 is too small

I like big cars

As Thom said, if you have money to burn, buy a 7, if you dont, buy a 3.

be cool like me and look for a 3.

My buddy just bought a fully loaded 2002 740 il for 10 grand. I mean navi leather dark blue 19’s the works. He stole that car!

^ holy shit thats cheap

Id rather roll in a 7 and pay for maint then be in a small 3.

lol, but as even you said you arent looking to buy, just looking. Going from a lesabre to a 7 series you dont even understand the cost of maintenance, especially if you dont do your own work and have the BMW diagnostics equipment. (or the workarounds if you dont).

So lets take something basic like Brakes

I have a guy that does cheap work.

New calipers were 45 a peice, rotors were 20, pads were 20.

What would be the price for a 7 series.

I am guessing calipers are 200, rotors are like 90. pads 50ish

If anyone Mike your the one to enlighten me on the cost of maintenence.

Hell new wheel bearing assemblys for my car were $130 per

e38 7 front brake calipers are NLA, used they go for about $200 per side.
e38 7 rear brake calipers are available, $245.52, per side.
$478.90 for 4 rotors
Pads are $111 per caliper
Hub/bearing assemblies for the rear are $180 each
Fronts are $197 each
etc etc

Funny part is, parts on the e38’s are the cheap parts, it’s the electrical gremlins and diagnostics at $75+ an hour that eat you alive. (oh yeah, and the 5’s are the same parts).

Yeah, wait until your climate control bugs out and the fucking 14 region 155 setting control board needs to be troubleshot or replaced.

Okay.

Perhaps you can give me some advice on somethign better to look for.

I am looking for a full size luxury car, same size, class as the 7 series.

Audi A/S8’s?

I have always like the bmw line and the 7s are just beautiful to me.

Its like 1500 in parts for redoing all the brakes, fucking wow then labor.

I still like them but it looks like i need an emergency fund of like at least a grand in case something goes wrong with it.

What else compares?

i was going to say something, but then i remember i deliver pizzas in my e30 haha

happy hunting

There is no substitute. Audi electronics are just as poorly made and significantly more expensive to repair, especially in the higher end models. Gotta pay to play, when you originally bought one of these $85k land yachts the repairs were expected. If you want something in that ‘class’ budget 15-20k for a decent one (purchase) and an additional 3-5k per year in maintenance.

god mike knows his shit

we need to have a sit down, you and me

Wow this is such a bad idea.

How about an older Acura RL? Its a bigger car and it’s a Honda.

infinity has some nice cars that are larger and luxury cars.

“There is not substitution” is bullshit. What that is meant to mean is, there is no euro-built substitute.

I know this won’t fly but, Lincoln LS’s are nice cars, not sure how they hold up (just know town cars hold up awesome but are super old man) but i’m sure they’re cheap to fix.

Unless you enjoy pissing liquid cash, this is a poor thought. If you do enjoy pissing liquid cash however, maybe I can interest you in a V-12 8-series?

.50 cal. rounds aren’t cheap, money’s gotta go somewhere…
