Anyone try hooking up a manual boost controller for any VW Mk4 platform on the 1.8T? I don’t want outragous boost, but I don’t like stock settings. I am keeping the motor pretty much stock for now. I just want to know of any pros, cons or preffered types if any.
speak to fshowcars, kilmer420, or vw16Vcabby. They all have.
i would not advise simply adding a boost controller and cranking up the boost. Take a look at different chipping options that are out there. Take a look at APR Tuning.
I had a customer’s 00 1.8t in a good while ago for some wiring problems. He had it turned up to 21psi on the stock tune and only had some hard pipes/filter and exhaust. I asked him if he ever had a problem with it and said never. I drove it and it drove pretty nice, but I cant imagine the motor would last that long with no fuel/timing control at that pressure.
I guess it technically can be done, but I would not crank it on my own car. Definitly chip it.
MY roommate ran one forever in his GTI, you can run about 17 or 18 psi without too big of an issue with one, he never had a problem for the year it was on there. He still got tuned eventually and it made a significant difference bc the timing maps are a little off with just a MBC and that much boost.
I am only shooting for around 12psi on a stock system. I want the APR direct port programing, but no green as of now. I just want to nudge up the boost a bit. I wouldn’t push it much past that without making other changes. I want to keep this car for a while.
If you want to do it for cheap, use a zener diode…search around on vortex for it…
I did see it on vortex and I can’t say I’m too big on the idea. I’m too picky with this thing. Right now it’s my daily and until my '86 gets its transplant, it’s the only one. I really don’t even want just a controller, but for now I don’t have the cash for the APR programming.
