boost levels

So I got my car re-tuned last year. Dropped the aem ems that had issues and went stock ecu tuned by one of the best in the area.
Before the tune I had my hks evc VI boost controller set for 12lbs = 279whp & 14.5lbs = 309whp.
Now I have it set at 12lbs = ~300whp & 16.5lbs = 350whp.
But the boost spike on the 12lbs goes as high as 16-17lbs & I hit 19lbs (Not pushing extremly hard) at the 16.5lbs level.
Should I be concerned about damage to the engine with this boost spike?
Engine = s14 sr20det, hks cams, apexi HG, forged pistons, gt2871r, splitfire coilpacks, z32 maf, 740cc tomei injectors…ect…
Also, it may just be me but it doesnt seem to rip as had as it used to when I had the aem ems and lower boost…
Do I just not know how to properly set my boost controller? Do I need a re-tune again?

Is the boost spiking or creeping? Does it make the most boost towards redline or right when the boost comes on?

Neither are good situations but each has a different problem/solution.

If it is spiking as boost comes on, you need to work with your boost conroller. Once you get the spike sorted out, the tune will likely be fine.
If the boost is creeping at redline, it’s not likely a boost controller issue. It could be a tune issue and/or a mechanical issue with your specific turbo/piping/manifold setup.

or wastegate…

It makes the most boost fast. like around 4-5k rpm

So it’s a spike, with your ebc you should be able to easily fine tune it’s operation and limit the spike. Go through the manual for that hks and get er done!! I believe it is the gain setting you should be adjusting.

To answer your question about engine damage, it is possible. If this new ECU is not tuned for the engine hitting the spike boost level (Undefined cell on map) it could possibly create a lean situation. Boost spikes happen in lower gears because the wastegate can’t keep up with the rapidly increasing RPM. The car was likely dyno tuned in 4th gear and the spike didnt happen. That might explain why it makes more hp up top but feels less powerful, the tune is not correct for the instant that the spike occurs right in the midrange of your powerband.

So mess with your ebc and all should be well if the car stays near its target boost level that it has been tuned for.
