For all of those with the anti-gun/bomb control satire…gun control and background checks certainly do not stop all events like this. But what they do do, is if guys like this come in contact with law enforcement, is make them take a second look and maybe raise some red flags, or even get them pre-emptively prosecuted on a weapons charge. Say they ran a background check on the older brother, it comes up that he was interrogated by the feds a few years ago, next thing you know maybe they’re keeping an eye on him. Then again, maybe not. Just like how so many gangbangers go down initially for minor drug possession charges, once they’re being prosecuted for something it opens the floodgates…

You assume:
- Someone who’s looking to commit a crime with a gun is going to go through legal means to get one first.
- Someone who’s looking to commit a crime with a gun has a background that would raise a red flag.
- Someone who’s looking to commit a crime with a gun, who also has a shady background, is actually dumb enough to try legal means to acquire one.
- Someone who’s looking to commit a crime with a gun, who gets turned down by a background check, is actually going to stop looking for said gun afterwards and not try illegal means after legal means are exhausted.
- Someone who’s looking to commit a crime with a gun doesn’t have someone else they can pay to be a straw buyer.
Besides, basic economics (which I KNOW you know); you can’t regulate something for which an effective black market exists.
You mean the background check they ran on him a few years ago when they decided he wasn’t a threat to the U.S…that must have worked so well. I’m so glad that background checks prevent things like this from happening…

i think i read that he got into an argument with his then at the time girlfriend and allegedly hit her; she called the cops but the charges were dropped.

I wouldn’t be suprised if the FBI stated that they had informants infiltrate this group long ago and supplied them with knowledge and materials (like the recent terrorist busts). These individuals couldn’t pull this off alone without raising red flags in my opinion.

This happens a lot when people are recruited by overseas intelligence officers to commit things like economic espionage (stealing intellectual property) and leak government secrets. The FBI actually advertises it as one of the tell-tale signs that someone might be getting involved in that sort of thing.
Obviously one interview on TV doesn’t prove any of that, but I am sure that the FBI is following any money trail that may exist.
I love that the FBI is trying to deflect blame onto Russia now because when they asked for more information about why Russia told them Tamerlan had become a radical extremist Russia didn’t get back to them.
They did 99% of the work for you identifying this guy and dropping him in your lap and when you failed to do the last little bit yourself you’re going to go back and complain. What an embarrassment. I guess when we have a president who has never taken responsibility for anything we shouldn’t expect any other government agencies to either.
