brake disassembly

how do i get those metal clips out tht hold the caliper in place?

theres one on top and bottom.

need to know how to get em out and in again without damaging them.

caliper is ubolted ut before it will shimmy free, those clips need to come out.

that is all.

good day to all.

Im confused…Which brakes? 240 or r32? Front or rear? There’s only two bolts to remove in order to remove the caliper. Which half is stuck? The cylinder body portion of the caliper, or the torque member (the kinda horseshoe shaped part that holds the sliding pins)

I’m not sure what clips you are reffering to…maybe the pad retaining clips?

s13 rear brakes

there are these metal clips holind the caliper in its place.

anybody know what im talking about?

ill snap some pics as soon as i can.

The bolts that you took out, were they 14mm or 17mm?

You may have removed the carrier bolts rather than the caliper bolts, they are 14mm and located at the back, top and bottom. Removing these will allow the caliper to come off. then the pads come out, then those stainless steel clips you are talking about will come out.

You may need to re-install the 17mm bolts into the carrier (also at the back, but closer to the center) to make this happen easily.

I hope this helps you out.

Theo

hey theo

that does help actually

i removed the smaller 14 mm on top and bottom

so your saying i have to remove the bigger 17mm and the metal clip will come out?

please confirm that this is correct as i think i may have read your post incorrectly.

thakns boss

No, sounds like you have done it correctly so far… you sometimes have to pry the caliper out of the caliper carrier with some rocking back and forth.

The 17mm bolts don’t have to come out if you are just doing pads. If you are removing the rotor, you have to take the carrier off.

Once the caliper is off, the pads will slide out (again with maybe a slotted driver) of the clips, then the clips will come out (again with a little messing around but no bending should be required).

Theo

its the rotor that needs to come off essentially.

ill give her a go tommarow, if i have anymore questions, ill pm ya

ive already removed on caliper on my junker before but this clip wasnt there. after the two 14mm bolts it slipped right off will a little rocking.

then i pulled the rotor off.

but now this clip is messing me up as i have no idea how to get it out, and the caliper ownt budge while its in place.

have u tried prying the caliper?

and to get the other part off yes its 2 17mm bolts and everythng should come right off

alright, so do you have the caliper completely off the car or just off as if you were doing a brake job? when i took my calipers off (completly off) i took the pads out and those clips practically fell out, yours may just be siezed in place? maybe spray them with some penitrating fluid and get under them with a flat head? dont know if that helps but good luck

its just brakes use a hammer!

ok lol

to clarify

im not doing a caliper swap, brake pad swap or anything like that

i just need the rotor off so the caliper needs to come off first

ive taken calipers off before, its only twop bolt. not hard.

but there these metal clips now that i havent seen before and the cliper wont budge with them in place. there sandwhiched in between the caliper and another part of the assmebly. what its called is beyond me.

i just need to know how to get these metal clips out. ill have pics up this friday.

ohh okay, so your not talking about the pad retainer clips, gotcha. is it maybe a 180sx specific thing because i have never seen such clips before…

alright

evrything is unbolted and ready to come off

but caliper is being stubborn and doesnt wanna bdge off the rotor

any tips for getting it to slide off?

a good old BFH, it did the trick for me

and maybe some penitating fluid between the pads and rotor.

tried that on my parts car first to see hjow it went

pad assembly snapped from the caliper
