Would having slotted rotors rid the need of ABS? Or would more stopping power would you need it more then ever.
Looking at brake setups, not sure what to go with, I believe I have ruled out drilled/slotted or drilled all together. Don’t want to eat the brake pads up…
Slotting or drilling doesn’t in and of itself make you stop much quicker. The main purposes of both systems are:
To vent used brake lining (brake dust) away from the pad more quickly to increase the effectiveness of the brake pad; and
To keep the rotor cool after repeated hard braking situations to reduce or eliminate brake fade. Hot brakes generally don’t work as well as cold brakes do (unless you are talking about ceramic components, which is a whole different system).
Cross Drilled brakes tend to crack over time if the holes are not drilled properly (ie cheap rotors), so really for the street they’re pretty unneccessary. Slotted gives you a nice cooling/brake dust removing effect without the chance of breakage, but it will increase your brake pad consumption slightly, depending on how hard you brake most of the time.
ABS is a nice to have, but they aren’t as effective for track use as standard brakes. In fact, if you know how to threshold brake properly, it’s been proven that ABS brakes can actually lengthen stopping distances. However, since most people in panic situations just mash the brakes to the floor and keep them there, it’s a good idea.
So think of it this way: If you are going to track the car on a regular basis and want absolute maximum performance, eliminate the ABS. If you still want to have the ABS capability with a little more stopping power, upgrade the rotor and brake pads and then you can have comfortable ABS for the street.
Why dont we just chat on MSN… LOL… would be much easier without wasting space on here. Thanks for the help Kris. Looks like ABS will be OUT! Cruise, OUT! Which is kind of good because I found a stock steering wheel in great condition, but doesnt have cruise buttons on it… Ahaha.
But, I was under the impression that the slotted/drilled was for quickened response via heating. They heat up to proper temperature quicker, and maintain that temperature for longer. Must be just for racing/ceramic like you said.
Nope, aftermarket brakes often have larger cooling fins on them to help them cool down more quickly to help the braking.
Lots of higher end cars come with ceramic brakes (Porsche GT3 for example), that actually improve with heat in them for track use, but these are generally useless on the street because you usually aren’t hard on the brakes all the time while just driving normally.
Oh, and I’d rather talk on here so I can whore up my post count!
First of all ,Vented or slotted rotors are to help get rid of the gas the forms between the pads and the rotors, not to get rid of brake dust.
Second, you can get race pads which also improve once you get the rotors hot. This is what people do if they dont want to upgrade to bigger brakes. This still works well up to a certain point till your brakes fluid boild and your rotors warp.
Third, ABS has nothing to do with type of rotors or pads you are running so if you want to get rid of it just pull the fuse and there you go you can flat spot your tires all day long now.
180SX brakes, Q45 Brakes , Skyline, Z32 brakes are all great options when upgrading your brakes.
