You possibly could have used some Linseed oil or Penetrol on the bare metal. But depending on the condition that still might not have looked good.

ohh, I have one of those too…
I made a toilet paper holder for my shop out of old parts, the base is a rotor, cam shaft welded to one side of the top (outside) of the rotor where the studs go through not the part the pads ride on, and an inner tie rod end off a 07 chevy 2500 truck welded to the top of the cam so the rolls dispense off the tie rod end lol.
