Buying A Car In Georgia

I think I would rent a flatbed and tow it. Is that a possibility for you? I just wouldn’t trust driving a car for the first time without fear of getting stranded.

yea, I haven’t thought of that. I guess it depends on what is is…

Post a link?

the trailer is cheap to rent. The truck to tow it could get expensive if you don’t have one. And if you’re borrowing a truck you cant go too big…the heavier the truck the more stable you’ll be.

May be cheaper to have it shipped, but that depends on what your time is worth.

My father in law sold us his RAV4 sport, shipping was $900 fully insured from Lockport to Central Texas.

To have a buddy drive it down with his girl, and fly them both back would be 500-600 bucks easy and that doesn’t count any of the money you will spend having people stay at your house a week.

If you have insurance and a BOS you should be ok. Worse case the cop should just issue a expired registration ticket that should be dropped once you have it registered in NYS. They can tow your car, but they can tow your car and arrest you for any offense.

Wow, I don’t what happened, But I only ever saw like three responses for this. I swore I checked after a couple days… weird. Anyway…

I called the their “DMV” which is actually just a subsection of their Department of Revenue which has a tag department. The Temp tags are only issued by dealers, there are NO tags for use by private sale. Transporting out of state or otherwise. They allow 7 days without tags for the car as long as title and bill of sale are on you.

NYS only issues temp tags for cars being taken out of state.

I even contacted the NC DMV to see if they would issue one, no. NC would only issue for a NC titled car.

I am 95% sure I am getting this car. But there is always that what if. So I am on the fence about getting the car registered ahead of time, but that would be a lot of trust on both sides. I am going to talk to them about it tomorrow to see what works best for both of us.

I came to the conclusion that I would probably be fine all the way home until I got 2 blocks from my place (Live in North Buffalo) and would get pulled over… I can imagine it, getting home form a 13 hour drive groggy as hell just to be 2 minutes from home and get pulled over. Only because on my way home a couple nights ago there were like 4 cops in the 10 or so blocks I drive from the 198. But I still might do it if it comes to that.

Could you drive to the first DMV after the nys line and register there? Might be the best compromise.

Or can you just talk the owner into letting you drive back on his plates (your insurance) and mail them back after you get home? I did that with a truck I purchased in Tennessee.

Yea but did you get pulled over? I believe the insurance has to match the registration. If nothing else I bet your insurance would fight any claims if his is previous/current.

I did not get pulled over, I also did not do anything that would get me pulled over. However I had the Reg and Insurance papers for that vehicle PLUS my own insurance.

I’m saying in the case of an accident. An insurance company will do anything it can to get out of paying. I guess I’m just becoming more risk adverse…
