Buying car on Saturday; no plates = tow?

I’m planning on picking up a car on saturday from a private party.

I will probably be able to insure it but not register/get plates for it.

… and I want to take it for a spin all weekend since it’s a manual :-D.

Fuck can I do so I do not get towed? Switch front plate from current car to it and hope no-one notices missing reg?

:picard:

get it towed or get the title first

(no you can not get dealer plates but these threads have alternatives)

this is a bad idea, and may or may not end well.

these are full of mostly good ideas, pick one and save yourself the possible trouble with the police.

Thanks guy, for transfer plate do I need title in hand or only VIN? I can’t get title till the day I’m picking it up.

Shit I need title too… bummer.

whatever fun you could have this weekend is not worth the trouble you could get into. have the guy drop the car off at your house then give him a ride home. that way you have the car in your possession.

This thread is a bad idea.

I can’t believe someone is dumb enough to ask if they should drive around with plates off a different car. That is the kind of thing you just do, you don’t ask. And you don’t do it to joy ride, you do it just to get the car home. That’s how the kid who bought my SRT4 got it home. I was pissed he didn’t come prepared but I wasn’t gunna turn the money down, oh and he drove it from buffalo to staton island.

Get the title, if it is in another state, you visit the dmv for that state, and get a transportation tag. When I brought my cobra home from virginia it was $5 for a 3 day tag. You have to have insurance and the title signed by the seller, a bill of sale wouldn’t hurt either. They don’t keep the title but you have to prove you just bought the car.

A lot of DMV’s are open on saturday, no?

When you get an in-transit permit in NYS you have to pay the $50 title fee and they keep the title. You also have to pay tax and the $10 in-transit fee. Its not worth it unless you are not putting the car on the road. You must turn the paper ‘plate’ they give you before canceling the ins.

this is needed to for the DMV to show tax http://www.nysdmv.com/forms/dtf802_01.pdf

I make 2 copies of this form to be filled out for personal records http://siy.cars.com/pdf/carscom_bill_of_sale.pdf

just put the plates on to take it home, then leave it and wait.

Just find the DMV that’s open on saturday.

Guys thanks for trying to help, there are no DMV’s open on Saturday in NY (Queens/BK/City) as far as I know. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I debated of using my car plates to move the car by my house… but coppers already started giving tickets for no front license plate and they go around checking inspections unless I wedge my car somewhere between two big trucks it’s risky.

So I decided to come get title on Saturday, reg it on Monday and just come back to get the car… unless DMV is open on saturday…]

Edit: Found some DMV’s open in Sat but they are in bumfuck, USA.

i just asked the previous owner if i could use his plates to take the car… and they didnt mind… as long as i had my own insurance

just throw your plates on and drive it around in Canada, they won’t be able to look up your American plate so you can’t get in trouble!

I will try to do that, you post on Bimmerforums too don’t ya.

I would rather drive with no plates, then get caught with switched plates

+1

I am pretty sure the persons insurance it is registerd to would have to cover in an accident.

and I would have to call bs to the DMV not being open on a saturday in NYC. what zip is the car at?
