letting someone use your plates to drive back

so I sold my M3 and the person is using my plates to drive it back

He has insurance in his name I just get nervous about this stuff.

Please discuss.

Drive it back to where?

I wouldn’t! but that’s me…

I’ve let a few board members use my plates, But i wouldn’t allow a random CL user.

It was two pretty wealthy kids they pulled up in a brand new Acura wagon

Eh, you should have made them get a temp / transfer plate for it’s too late now.

Ugh I guess I’ll be sweating it out for the next few hours

Holy dangerous move Batman.

All depends on who’s buying it/how far.

Dont sweat it… I let the kid from NJ that bought my car use my plate. I told him dont drive like an idiot, any tickets are his issue, and if he decides to not return the plate then Ill just report them as stolen. What is someone going to do with your plate anyways? Rob a bank!!!

Why is it such a dangerous move?

The car has insurance on it…

ever hear of Vicarious Liability?

I’ve never gone to pick up a car or bike bought private party without MY plates sorted out, and i’ve never had anyone come to me to pick up a car from me without plates sorted…

so i’m useless here.

Bingo. NYS is one of the few ass backwards places that the vehicle owner is liable. In 05 congress passed a law that shielded lease companies and rental agencies but that wouldn’t protect you in a situation like this.

By lending the plates technically you still own the vehicle since it doesn’t change ownership until the title paperwork gets turned into the DMV. By forcing them to get a temp plate that ownership is legally changed.

99.9% chance you’ll be fine, but I wouldn’t do it again. Last private party sale I did I offered to drive the car to the guy’s house in Boston (NY) on my plates if he would give me a ride home after I took the plates off.

I’ve had a user here let me do it. And I’ve done it for people in the past. But random craigslisters? No way

Basically if you’re someone I’d trust enough to borrow my car I’d let you borrow the plates on a car I was selling you. It’s pretty much the same liability.

I just heard on the radio an M3 driven by two young kids ran into a daycare center and then bursted into flames.

^ I know that was crazy!! I hope it’s not your M3

Ha ha

there are sometime weird scenarios that prevent temp tags from happening. I got my A3 in Pittsburg and it had a lien and even though he paid it off he couldn’t get a title for me so I had to drive it back on his plate and wait for the title. He let me do it because the sale was on the line (I wasn’t buying if I couldn’t drive it home).

So I would take the risk on somebody if needed, but would try to avoid it.
