Right now I have a 3 way splitter in the basement. One line is for internet, the other 2 end up at TV’s within the house. I recently purchased a LCD for my room and my room mate is adding an LCD to the family room. I picked up a cable box from TW so I could get all the hockey games in my room since I’m off my leg for a month.
The internet line runs directly to my room. First, I figured I could just split the cable before the modem and run an extra line to my new cable box. Well, it cut my internet speed in half… That wont cut it.
Instead of having TW come to my house and charge me a service fee, I was just going to replace the 3-way with a 5-way, because I’m also adding the LCD in the family room. Then, run the cable myself.
My question, whats the best 5-way to get the most performance (internet, HD…) with the TW service?? I’m not too familiar w/ splitters and the frequencies involved, so I need some direction.
i thought time warner doesnt charge for service fees? thats their marketing campaign anyway…
“yeah, our service sucks. but we fix it for free! unlike fios”
that is not how you want to do it. You want to have a 2way splitter off the main feed, one goes to your internet, one to another splitter, in your case looks like a 3 way. Then a new cable to the room with the modem.
Each split cuts 3.5db from the signal, you only have so much signal to work with from the pole. You’ll want your internet to grab the first 3.5 leg off a 2way or a 3way, internet is 2way, so even if your TV works ok, your return is going to hurt added splitters to the internet line.
A proper install for one cable modem and one digital box would be a 3way with the 3.5 leg to the modem, a 7 leg to the digital and the 3rd leg to another splitter for analog only tvs. If you only have 3 tvs and internet a 4way should be fine, the cable system is designed for a 4way, but in amherst adelphia cut corners and that may not cut it for the internet.
Will your roommate also be using a box?
Make sure your internet is on the 3.5 leg in the existing splitter in the basement, if its on a 7, you can move it to the 3, then add the 2 way, not the proper way to do it, but it will work.
PS technically there is no 5way splitter, only 2,3,4,8 and 16s.
Post how many tvs and digital boxes you have.
TW does not charge for service calls, if you wish to have a line run to the tv/hsi from the basement, its only $20… Pretty good deal considering how much that would cost in materials alone from ratshack or home depot.
