P1446 EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (Closed)
Stupid simple fix. Dealer will tell you that you need a whole new EVAP cannister and valve. Just buy the Valve. It is rediculously expensive for what it is though. Some of the inside of the valve is actually made of metal and rusts over time and then it starts to stick. The new valves look like the insides have more plastic so it won’t rust.
The canister is located behind the driver side rear wheel. If you remove the wheel then you have easy access to the valve with out taking anything else apart.
Pardon my shitty cell phone pics.
Here is the valve.
Here it is on the cannister.
To remove it there is a tab on the cannister i circled in this pic, still hard to see, that you push down.
You can see the tab better in this pic. You push the tab down and turn it a like a 1/8 turn to the left. Then gently wiggle it out.
Thanks for the info guys!
and thanks for the pics!
Should I get this valve at the dealer or some where else?
Dealer will be your best bet since they have these on hand. Its a very common problem. I believe there was a recall for like 99-03 and 05-06 sentras. Funny how 04 was left out. The valve is around 100 bucks i think. I can’t really remember, gf traded her 04 in on an 09.
Thanks Greenbull. The dealership has them for $102…before tax
Ill probably get this today.
Once this is done will the light reset and turn off?
Also, she said her Gas per mile has gone down…could this be why??
Thanks
this happened on my brother in law nissan pathfinder is it like a common problem on all nissans? lol
Anyone know how to reset the light?
had this same problem with my sentra. the valve was stuck closed so when i would get gas, i would have to pump a few dollars, and wait for it to bubble down, otherwise it would spray out the filler.
the light should reset itself after a certain number of miles (don’t know off the top of my head, i started my car a day or so later and the light was off), or you can leave the battery unplugged overnight.
I dont’ know how long it takes for the light to go off whether is be miles driven or start cycles. I went to advanced auto and borrowed the scanner real quick and cleared it.
It could definitely be why her MPG went down.
Cool
well she called the dealer and told the service guy the number. HE said he never heard of that and she should come in and get it looked at for $90…hah. Then he said it could be a number of things. Plus, she should hurry up(inspection up this month) because once fixed the light may not go off for a week or so.
Sounds to me like he just wants the cash…
Anyways, so yea you guys think/know its this part
Ill probably just have her buy it tomorrow
Thanks All!
If you’re unsure then just take the valve off and inspect inside. It really won’t take you all that long. You can easily see if it is rusted. I hooked my gf’s up to a powered project box and turned it on and off to see if the valve moved. It barely budged and was stuck blocking the opening.
ah ok
ill check it first
thanks!
i put the part in last night…probably took 5mins thanks for the pics it helped
the light didnt go off yet, will follow up though
could always just go to advanced and use their scanner and clear the code yourself. she would have a few days to get all the systems to ready status.
advanced with do that?
Go to advanced auto and ask to use their OBD 2 scanner. They ask for your license. Take scanner to car and clear the code. All done.
alright cool, yea i asked her and it still is on…ill have her go to advanced
She had the oil changed at Nissan, the guy asked if she wanted him to clear the code. She said yea, he did, and its been off since.
Pumping the gas problem went away and her MPG are going up
Thanks a lot guys!
