Would like to buy myself a late present, something to take with me around DC. The price limit is pretty high, but I don’t mind older models seeing as i understand little about photography.
So recommend me a good DSLR, with changeable lenses. Smaller size would be nice, and lower price as well.
Secondary question, what’s a good all around lens? From rumors and such, I’ve heard the lenses that come in the package are generally junk. (I have no real basis for that statement other than hearsay)
Well if price isn’t much of a concern. The best all around lens is an 18-200mm. No swapping, very clean Nikkor lens. But it runs about $600.
As far as a camera, D60 would be good to start. But again, if price isn’t too big a deal, and you are confident that you will keep going with it, you might as well step up to a D90 and take advantage of all the extra shit it comes with. Including better quality.
This question will be answered in full detail on www.buffalofstop.com/forums btw. We’re in the process of putting up a slew of information.
yea, that is one issue. Being down here there are plenty of things I’d like to capture, but I can be pretty ADD. Gung-ho one week, then flippant the next, and while the price isnt awfully expensive, I wouldn’t want it to go to waste.
x2 on the 18-200. If you don’t buy a kit and you will only have one lens I think the best lens for the money (cheaper) is the 55-200mm nikkor. If you just want to get a taste to see if you like it, get a nikon d40 or d60, and get whatever lens yo feel comfortable paying for. For walking around DC shooting you wont NEED the 18mm, and will likely be perfect with the 55-200 and you will save yourself $400.
edit: The kit lens is pretty meh, but if you get the 18-55mm VR lens it is a very good general purpose lens. it is basically going to get you by in any normal circumstance, however it will never be the lens you take GREAT pictures with (IMO)
I think the 55-200 is great, but most certainly not a general purpose lens. Starting at 55mm adds a lot of physical limitations to the pictures you can take, and the vast majority of my photos are taken sub 50mm. going all the way down to 18mm can create a very dramatic effect when done right. You’ll never get as much information to the viewer with a 55-200 as you could with an 18-55.
That’s just my opinion. They have their own particular uses, but for what I do, 18-55 gets WAY more use. Which is why they sell it with the camera.
Get a D40 and rock the stock lens, see where that takes you.
The D40x, D60, D80 all dont do much at all additional that the D40 wont do. The next logical step up is the D90.
You could go with the D60, it does have a few nice features, but it takes about the same pictures and has a less sensitive sensor. Its just a little nicer camera to use with marginally better menus and features.
