My friend has a RSX-S. He just got new rims and tires (17" Rota subzeros hubcentric, and Hankook HRIIs 225/45/17s)
So he took them to Firestone to get mounted and balanced. Hes using his stock lugs. After getting the new rims and tires on, hes noticing shaking in the steering wheel around 65+ mph, worse at some times than others. He took it back and had them re-balance the tires, and the problem is persisting.
Any ideas on what is causing this?
Could it be that he is using his OEM lugs that dont have as much of a contact point as tuner lugs would? Would that cause a problem like this?
*Ride was perfect with stock rims and snows (no shaking at any speed up to 85 mph), so we dont think its an alignment issue, unless the guy who drove his car into the shop to mount the tires hit a curb with the car and didnt tell us (theres no damage to the rims so we dont think that happened).
Or could it be that firestone has crappy balancing eqipment, should he try taking it somewhere else?
It’s got to be balancing. If his stock lugs are torque’d to factory spec, they shouldn’t be a problem. Besides, if it was the lugs his wheels would have fallen off by now.
See if they can do a road force test on them with the balancer to see if its a tire issue? I don’t know what kind of wheel balancer they use over there.
I’d be screaming at a manager if that was me. Unless they bent/warped your wheel while putting the new tires on (or if it got bent in shipping), or you have one of those funky ring adapters with the wheels I’d have to agree that it’s bad balancing.
Do the wheels have Hub adaptor rings?
You need to make sure the adaptors are seated properly.
I ruined a set by tightening the lugs not realizing the adaptor had moved a bit.
did it come with hubcentric rings? were the y installed? if there using a coats machine ask them to hit shift 5. both numbers diplay when u hit the the total together needs to be under .21 firestone sucks at life
trust me ive seen this b4. a guy went to a undisclosed location balanced the tires 4 times. came to me said charge me whatever i just want them to stop shaking. pulled off one wheel saw they were missing. got a 10 dollar tip lol
ALSO ALIGNMENTS WONT CAUSE SHAKES.POORLY WARN TIRES DUE TO BAD ALIGNMENTS WILL THOUGH
the rims are supposidly hubcentric, so they shouldnt require the rings.
After the second time going to firestone, and the problem persisting he called them back and the guy there told him “what do you want me to do, you brought us aftermarket rims, and tires you didnt buy from us… and we balanced them a second time for free…”
how do they do a road force test? and Im not sure what type of machine they use there.
its a expensive balancer firestone most likely doesnt have. tell him to demand the money for the balancing back. if these r new tires they r beign cock bags. is this the one in williamsville on transit. if so talk to jim the manager get your money back and pm me ill be able to get it done right
Preaching to the choir man I just found it funny we all posted the same thing
And for the record, Firestone sucks. I knew they would pull the “you didn’t buy them from us” routine. Dunn Tire does the same crap. You need to be screaming at a mangager right now. Get your money back for the balancing, and take it somewhere where they have a clue. Maybe the place Innovative uses or maybe JDMR2 can help you out.
Hey this is Jeff, Subaru Dans friend, the one with the Problem. i belong to Clubrsx.com and i searched and asked, and rota Subzeros are “hubcentric” and do not require hubcentric rings. I ordered my rims from www.jaydm.com and he said i didnt need them, i acutally called him back and ordered “tuner Lugs” cone shaped, not cup shaped lugs and he said he has sold hundreds of sets to RSX owners, and this has never happend. when i brought it to firestone and he said the balance was off from the original, which makes me think theyre machine isnt really that good for aftermarket rims (rims where you can only put the weight on the inside). I live in Albany, so going to williamsville is a little out of the way, but thanks for the suggestion. I called Tire warehouse, and told him what was happening, and he said theyre machinery is better then firestone, so i am going to go there tommorow with my aftermarket lugs and have them rebalance them and mount them, I hope this fixes the problem. I have been driving to work like this since monday (20 miles each way) will this ruin my rims? i am going tommorow after work, would it be okay to drive one more time to work? I really cant think of anything else that would cause this.
Tell Firestone to take your wheels to a place with the appropriate balancing equipment. This happened to me before and if I remember correctly it was something to do with the speed of the balancing machine. The more expensive machines are able to test balance is more real world-like conditions.
Rota wheels are hubcentric so no rings are required.
thanks everyone, so i assume that it is firestones fault, and the place i bring it to tommorow will fix it. Wehen i brought it back to firestone they said they were off balance, so this gives me hope that its there fault and not the rims or my car. The place i called today said that theyre machinery is a lot better then firestone, its strickly a tire place so i assume it is.
