Ok, before I call the DMV tomorrow (refuse to use their sorry ass site which looks as though it was a school project for some middle school kids), I figured I’d ask if anyone knows here. I’m almost definitely purchasing another BMW from North Carolina, however, the current owner has lost the title to the car and is going on active duty the 24th… this poses quite the problem for me. Is there any way I can register the car in NYS without the old title or am I screwed?

have him apply for a new title. I know in nys, if you simply ask them to “put a rush on it” they can have it to you within a week. happened to my 94 ninja when I bought it.

I hope you meant the NC’s dmv site look likes a school project, what a f’n joke. They don’t have any info on getting a replacement, but their main office # is 919-715-7000.
BUT, as mentioned to brent, go to the dmv, tell them you bought a car and only have the previous registration and bill sale, and ask if you can register it with just that. This option was given to me before I told them what car I even had . Otherwise a replacement title would have to be issued by NC rules, which could take months.
From what I understand, NY’s DMV gets to skip a bunch of steps when you want to register a car, which goes right in their system and automatically puts everything in your name.

No e30, but I am joining the touring ranks, I’ve already blabbed about it enough to everyone I’ve seen lately. More details when I have the car (next week possibly)
