Career change ideas...

A few of you may have noticed me not being my normal ‘self’ as of late, albeit in person or on the forum…

I’m not happy with my career and it’s getting to the point that it’s affecting my life and mood outside of work. I’d give anything to be able to turn back the hands of time 10 years and get out of aviation right when I got out of the military, but unless BoxerSix builds me a time machine, that’s not going to happen, lol.

Anyway, this has come about because until recently, I’ve always been to be employed in the area that I consider home…the Capital Region (other than my military career which I don’t regret). Currently, I’m living/working in Watertown, NY Sunday night-Friday evening (helicopter electronics) and although it pays really well, I hate the area and the fact that I feel like my life is on pause during the week.

Now, I know nothing is free and that I’m not going to jump into a job in the area that pays decent without an education in whatever field that it may be. I’m going to put into the corrections academy as soon as it opens again, but I want to be more proactive in the meantime. My aviation mechanical/electrical background ‘should’ give me a chance to somewhere that will recognize those talents, but no such luck as of yet. I’ve got another year and a half to use my GI bill from the military, so if I choose to go to school for something, I want it to be the right choice.

So, other than waiting for something aviation related to pop up in the Capital Region, what’s another career field that you guys think I should look into?

Thanks,
Travis

I’m extremely happy with being in college at the ripe ol age of 21. :rofl

Move south.

/thread.

trav this is a soul searching thing man . , as much as ya know ill help ya its on you man really . but when it all comes down to it , i think porn is your best bet dude

He could “carve” out his own niche. Metrosexual curved dick porn could be your golden ticket man!

Honestly, I’m not sure how the job market is for someone with your skill set, but this is not the job market I’d leave a well paying position

I told PJB about this… its called the the strong inventory. You answer a multitude of basic questions and you want to answer them as truthfully as humanly possible. Its not a sure thing… but it really helps you visualize your interests, what your good at, and what a good career might be for you.

How old are you? How many college credits do you have?

porn is def the way to go. srsly though, i’ve def been there and it blows. it will work out though, just keep your head up and push through, the rest will fall in place.

What do you want to do?

Corrections, or something electrical/mechanical/hydraulic/etc in the Capital Region. Key is staying in the area.

Move to Nevada.
Obtain job at secret aviation test site.
Buy trailer in desert.
…wait, this is my dream.

Albany has a lot to offer in terms of career choices, more than what is in my area. Have you considered something in the railway field? You could probably easily get a job as a signal maintainer with CSX or CP. Amtrak can be a cluster fuck to get into but anything union pays well.

i took the corrections test in april of '08 i believe. got my canvas letter oct '10. called last week and should here from them about my interview before the end of the month. my cousin took the last test they offered and still hasnt heard anything back from them and his father has pull due to being one of the head honchos in albany academy. it might be a while til you hear something back after the test

well with whatever you decide on i wish you luck sir.

Plenty of high paging careers that don’t need official education.

Electrician union? Nat grid? Apply to manufacturing facilities with your mech background. Pilot?

Not sure if true, but I heard they just put a freeze on hiring corrections officers for a couple years (~2013).

Shocking you want to stay here, but I know what you mean. I don’t like my job either. Pays the mortgage though.

But an FYI, if you get into corrections, you will be working nights for the first awhile. Might want to take that into consideration. (i.e wouldn’t be out much at night).

You are correct with Cuomo closing i think 4-7 prisons you have all those officers that will be looking to go into different facilites

I took my test in October '09 and got in for my interview/background test October '10. Had to go through the physical/medical test then took the Psyc test and and interview with thier psychiatrist. That was back in December that I finished all of that and they said it could take 4-6 months to hear back. I occasionally check in with my investigator. Who is your investigator? I’ve even heard it could take over a year to hear back.

I feel the same way man. This last year has really gotten to me. Little KK rant coming, and maybe a little too much information… but I dont care.

I am, I actually had to think about it for a sec here, I will be 28 in july, 1 month married, no kids. Been in “my” field for 8 years now. IT support. Servers and Active directory administration now. While it pays the bills, working for someone in a career with very little “self worth”, computers by nature are very by the books, so the creativity isnt really in my particular section of the IT field, and its a salary pay so the harder you work or harder you TRY doesnt really make a difference.

I got promoted to another position this last year and got paid more to do essentially less work. “yeeepie!” right? NO. I hate it. I drive 66 miles a day, pay 100+ in gas, 130$ a mo for parking, just to get here, sit on my ass, do some stuff when needed and go home. I feel VERY little self worth at the end of the day. All the while my far fetched Jetta RWD project is not getting done, lack of money and time is why its not done. All day I think about car stuff, and wish I wasnt in an office chair. I am in the SAME boat as you man.

KrazyKid wants a new gig. Something where the harder, smarter and better I work I get rewarded, both monetarily and mentally. Once my soon to be wife is done with school, its my time to go out on a limb and take a risk at something new. Starting small now, like I have been and once that time comes push harder for it and just make it happen is the plan, so I am selling toys, paying off debts, cutting back on spending big time (yeah jetta wont be done soon I guess), and putting myself in a position I want to be in, to stay on track for once in my life, focusing on MY goals.

My advice, from what I am slowly figuring out now is… Just fucking do it. The longer you wait, the farther the goal could be from reach. Procrastination is evil. Its one thing to “plan ahead”, but you can only call them plans when actions are taken to accomplish them. If you plan ahead for ever, its a pipe dream, not a plan.
