Only really applicable to dealerships though as they’re the ones using the system.

El oh el.
Wow. Fox news really has lost a lot of respect from me over the past year. I used to like watching it along with CNN for different sides but holy shit, the stuff that comes up on their shows is just mind bottling.
Why the tinfoil hat? Do you think they just made up that story or do you not care about the government reading all computer files? I realize only dealerships can do this but…
The story is completely true, I just don’t believe there is a sinister plot behind it… But I could be wrong.
That video pisses me off the more times I watch it. I wish they actually took someone who had computer knowledge to make these videos.
“When you are logged on to the DoT CARS system, your PC is considered a federal computer system and is property of the US government.”
NO FUCKING SHIT. You are logged into their system and they have the right to use any information you send to them and record it. You are using a government site and its obvious they log information because if some dealer tries to scam a government program, they want to show it. “WHEN LOGGED ON” is when you are connected. If you are sending bad data, tries to exploit, the internal system you are being watched. There is nothing saying that your computer will be forever monitored. The site does not install anything on your computer whether you are a dealer or a consumer.
Any site you access has similar terms. If you use a county, city, state, federal service that connects you into their system, they have the SAME policy that while you are connected, they can monitor anything you send. The legal part is the same for any site you signup for or register. I guarantee they haven’t looked at their Facebook ToS and privacy policy lately.
This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.
I agree there is no sinister plot BUT, it just seems the feds are using every excuse they can to invade businesses and people’s lives. It is one little bit at a time which makes it seem harmless but…
Chrylser ran out of cars and cancelled their program
I don’t know man.
It seems like it would be easy for dealerships to scam this system. It also seems like it would be easy for hackers to gain access to it, and claim money for fake automobiles.
The website/application is responsible for a lot of money to be tossed around. I would sure hope for the sake of the safety of OUR tax dollars that they are monitoring the transactions/connections VERY closely to ensure that the only people being paid out, are legitimate.
x2
The system doesnt take over your computer. It just logs any data you send, your location (by IP address), etc so if suddenly they were scammed, they can track it back to a dealer. Your computer is more likely to be controller by a porn site you visit then by loggin into the cars site.
I hear you, I want them to make sure it is legit when they are spending but, (paraphrasing)“All files may be copied… …authorized officials both domestic and foreign”. Is this really neccessary? WTF?
If someone from another country tries to abuse the system, they have the right to refer the information over to the foreign government so they can pursue charges since the US will not have the authority to…
Any other brain busters? I have written a number of online ToS and privacy policies. Its standard procedure to protect themselves. Its a government organization and program so they will be pursuing any fraud attempt on this system so they need to put it in writing becuase if they didnt, you know this would be turned around saying they have no right to track and all blah blah blah
lame lame lame lame
Important Cash for Clunker Facts:
– Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date.
– Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify for the program.
– Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans will have different requirements).
– Trade-in vehicle must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in.
– You don’t need a voucher of any sorts, qualified dealers will apply a credit at purchase.
– You will be eligible for any other advertised rebates or discounts by the dealer in combination with the credit you receive through the CARS Program.
– Program runs through November 1st, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
– Just added rule: The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate. (Dealers are allowed to keep $50 of scrap value to cover their administrative cost).
– Only new-car dealers can issue the credit, and they must have an active franchise agreement with the manufacturer. This means that used-car dealers can’t issue the credit, nor can any new-car dealer that has lost its franchise (e.g., many recent Chrysler and GM dealers).
What You Need to Bring to the Dealer:
– Proof of Registration going back at least 1 year.
– 1 Year Proof of Insurance. If your insurance card does not cover the entire year preceding the trade in, you will need other proof of insurance. Contact your insurance company to get evidence of 1 year worth of insurance. The form must include, at a minimum, the insurance company, policy number, VIN, start and end date of insurance (showing at least 1 year).
– “Clear” title. This means the title must be free of any liens or other encumbrances. If you have liens, you need to get these cleared before going to the dealer. This may include evidence on the face of the title showing no lien; that the title has been cleared (signed and stamped accordingly), or with an attached lien release from the lien holder.
– The vehicle manufacturer date found on the driver’s door or door jamb is less than 25 years old when you trade it in.
Is Your Old Clunker Eligible for Trade-In?
As you may have noted above, only vehicles less than 25 years old that gets 18 MPG or less can qualify for the CARS program. Luckily for everyone, there are two great resources you can check to see if your vehicle qualifies for the “cash for clunker” program. Edmunds.com has compiled an large list of eligible trade-in vehicle list, and has saved you time by omitting vehicles with trade-in value better than$4,500. Because each individual may still different in its trade-in value, you can check the official CARS website to see if your vehicle is eligible by visiting the eligibility tool the government has setup (be warn that the site may be slow to load as its under heavy usage).
my car? dodge neon 2002
Fuel Type
Regular
MPG (city)
21
MPG (highway)
29
Why is that lame? THe goal is to cut emissions from the cars on the road. A neon has a small 4 cylinder and doesn’t pollute very much.
Why did the EPA change the MPG values of many many models after this program was announced? How nice of them to raise values 1mpg on many models so that you cannot use this program. Pretty much if your not driving a truck or station wagon your fucked.
im driving a station wagon and im still fucked
OCTOPUS TENTACLES REGROWTH

Apparently, the program is due to end Monday, August 24th at 8PM EST - so if you haven’t taken advantage of this, you’re out of luck.
Oh, and it’s great to see how this is a boon to the US economy, especially given that 58% of all the C4C cars were foreign (per Newsweek article today: http://www.newsweek.com/id/212999).
If I had a winter clunker I’d be all over this deal.
