UPDATES: I got my turbo header today and must say it looks great. The quality of the fabrication and welds is damn impressive. The collector end was fully ported and all welds are smoothed out. The exhaust side is also ported to have smooth transitions.
I mounted up the turbo header to check clearances and see just how much work is going to need to be done to the downpipe and upper charge piping… unfortunately it looks like it’s going to require a fair amount of fabrication and possibly an entirely new dp and upper charge. I’m hoping to be able to get the turbo mounted on the header this weekend and the dp and upper charge pipes fabbed up but that might be a bit ambitious unless I have some help.
Anyways… on to the pics.
I also decided to port my compressor housing a bit while I had the turbo out. Sorry for the bad pic but you get the point.
Thanks guys, the black car is my GF’s Tiburon, it’s also boosted via a NextGen Motorsports s/c kit… it’s decently quick but is only running about 6psi right now.
drvnkd - go for it man! and let me know if you have any questions or need any help along the way. I’m always willing to help out however I can.
All I need to do is get a free to me charger functional.
I have a ford charger that bdr5oh gave me 5 years ago that I could possible revive.
I was going to return it to him, and it’s been in my trunk for a month or two.
If I can reassemble and get it to spin freely, it might be worth toying with.
(I tried to clock the turbine housing but could not, then it started binding up)
I have a Zex wet kit too… I could make a really nice ricer if I wanted to.
Turbo that will not be required to do much and an empty N20 bottle that I have no intetions of filling anytime soon
If you need a rebuild for the charger I usually go through the guys at the gpopshop, they have always treated me awesome and prices aren’t too bad. The website is www.gpopshop.com if you need it.
I haven’t updated this in awhile so I figured I should post up some updates and some new pics…
I’m very close now to wrapping this thing up, I have my profec boost controller to install still as well as a few vacuum lines but that’s basically it before I can fire the car back up and start working on the tune. I’m very happy how the entire thing has come together but now i’m ready to take the car out and start beating the hell out of it
I don’t have any pics of that but I tapped the front air/oil seperator on the block where the stock head is connected too through the block. I then installed an industrial brass check valve between that and my intake manifold and a catch can so it will vent crankcase pressure but not leak boost.
Well I was finally able to get the car to New Era Performance for some tuning and numbers. Unfortunately the tuning did not go smoothly at all… the tuner there (Mike) did the best that he could with the car but Cavy’s are definately not his specialty (they are no ones :banghead:) so he was very handcuffed.
Regardless he did manage to tune the car in for 1 bar of boost before running out of fuel in the fuel tables. Since the tune however I noticed he did not touch my pulsewidth multiplier tables at all which will net me a large amount more fuel so I will be doing my own further tuning from here on out and will likely head back to New Era later this summer for more numbers on higher boost. I found out that I am probably the best person to tune this car since it’s such a pain and I have had a few years of experience with it.
In no way am I knocking Mike or New Era, he did a great job with the car, it runs 100% better than it did when I took it to him and I appreciate the 6-7 hours he spent tuning the car with me.
Anyways at 14psi the car put down 371whp 379wtq… I have yet to have the opportunity to put more fuel into the car or turn up the boost due to being so busy and bad weather around here but this weekend I plan to try working it up to 20ish psi… this should easily net me around 450whp… not too bad for just a little Cavy
No times yet, I just got the car tuned last Thursday and haven’t had any time to play around with it. I also want to up the boost a bit before it hits the track but i’m not expecting any miracles for track times… I didn’t build the car for the 1/4 mile as FWD = fail in that regard.
When mike tuned my turbo cavy we had to unplug the O2 sensor to keep the computer from compensating. i was using greddy emanage as a piggyback though. What kind of issues were you having with tuning?
We tuned the car 100% in open loop so we had no PCM feedback and then turned closed loop back on once done to allow for the fuel trims to adjust out the oddities.
The biggest tuning issue we were having was getting fuel to it… the fuel tables were maxed out on 1 bar (or so he thought) but once I got home I had realized that the injector pulsewidth multiplier tables were untouched. By increasing those at various MAP (kpa) levels it allows me to add more fuel based off the MAP.
cool, sounds like you found out for the get more fuel from the tune. Then maxing the tables, like it was. Call mike and let him know, he’ll hook you up on retuning the car now that it has room.
BTW this is john that you talked too.
Yea its possible to cut 1.5’s like mindless in his hatch but ask him how much he likes replacing axels/wheels bearings/etc every time he launches on slicks
Hey John!
I’ve got to play around with the car a bit this weekend but if everything works out I’ll definately let Mike know what I’ve figured out. I know the car was an absolute nightmare for him. If I have good results I definately might head back up there at some point to have him fine tune it in and get some more numbers
Just a few updates on this car since last posting… which I can’t believe was like 3 and a half months ago! Wow this season flew by!
Anyways after my tuning/dyno time at New Era I took the car home and began reworking a few things. I had the car up to about 25-26psi on the t60-1 and then the turbo grenaded on me… I was pretty close to just calling it quits and parting the car out… but I just couldn’t do it yet…
The car now has a Precision SC61 turbo on it which flows a shit ton more air than the old 60-1. I’ve got the car currently tuned to 21psi and I can say without any doubt it’s night and day over the old 60-1 at 25psi…
Seeing that the car put down 371whp at just 14psi with the smaller dinosaur turbo I would really like to get the car back to New Era now to get some new/final numbers before I part it all out.
I’ve been having my fun with the car this summer, the tune on the car now is very manageable… drives nearly like stock and i’ve been able to injest some more timing back into it. I’m satisfied with the car right now as far as driveability and power goes… but with this damn cold weather now it is starting to play with the idle and coastdown a bit…
Anyways here’s a pic I grabbed/edited from a picnic we had last weekend…
