CD rom problem.

I just upgraded my dads computer to windows xp, it was windows me. Well now his cd player wont read the cds. it is saying that it is working but wont read any disk. His computer is a hp pavalon 6545C.

Any suggestions?

stock cd player like when u first buy it… or aftermarket one… if anything check the device manager, for any question marks, to see if it needs to be updated…

Stock cd/cd rw, I cant find nothing for a update on that cdrom drive.

do all windows updates…is the drive making excessive noise?

under my computer, does the drive even exist… if it does, i would check the connections inside the tower (the ribbon(s)) to be sure that they are properly in… check for any missing pins as well…

1.does the drive eject?
2.Show up in device manager?
3.Show up in the bios?

i’m guessing this is the same drive you loaded XP from?
sliiight chance that was the last task the drive would ever complete…

but… goto device manager… select the cdrom… uninstall it…
reboot… it will redetect… should be working again… if not… get a new drive.

sometimes reinstalling the ide/atapi controllers will do the trick as well… should be a few lines down from the cdrom in the device manager

Yes does all of that.

I just updated to windows xp so what ever xp did to the drive i am not sure.

Dont i need the cd for this?

Did the updates. not doing anything such as not spinning the disk.

I got it to work once then that was it.

maybe picking up a new drive would be best if you cant figure it out. my old HP’s dvdrom didnt last too long.

plus it’s cheep  and you’ll get a brand new one without all the hastle

try finding out the model number of the drive and do a search thru google… see if anyone else is having/had the same problem

Yeah i did and there was a problem with the firmware on the drive, it said it wasnt compatible with xp. and the update dont work either.

lol same problem with my old HP’s dvd rom… bah, probably better off anyway

no not unless ure in 95, u need ure cab files:biglaugh:
