Chain cleaner talk.

I’ve seen a number of threads online talking about DuPont as their miracle product for cleaning and waxing the chain

Anybody else use it? Does it sell locally?

If not what do you use?

From what I’ve heard simple green goes wonders to clean the chain as well.

sub’d

I have chain wax type stuff, but not cleaner. I don’t even know the brand, I’d have to check when I get home.

Kerosene.

Very good review of the DuPont from webbikeworld

Found a very interesting chain brush as well

I am currently using Maxima chain wax. I used to use the du pont teflon stuff, but a lot of local stores stopped carrying them for some reason.

No amount of chain lube/clean would help if it is only done once a year. The frequency you lube it is much more important.

I wouldn’t water as it’s corrosive by definition, much better cleaner alternatives out there. Plus water doesn’t degrease well.

I use this stuff to lube:

I usually don’t “clean” my chain. I just wipe off any excess that builds up with a microfiber towel.

It appears that DuPont dry wax is more or less discontinued.

Time to bring this up again.

Found a good discussion on the matter.

Actually debating on just using 10w-30 oil on the chain and just doing it more often.

I’ve never had chain and sprockets last more than 15,000 miles but I usually changed it on the side of caution anyway.

These guys have them going for 30,000 miles or so. Thats pretty considerate savings. $$

Best way to safely clean the chain which I would do before each lubrication, is using kerosene. I used to use the Dupont wax, but before that I used gear oil and it worked great also.

Kerosene works real well. That and a toothbrush will easily get the job done for cleaning.

If your chain has a o ring type chain do not use any petrol products on it as it eats the o ring etc . I always used simple green with a stiff brush . Lube it up with the chain wax while warm

when i went to pick up my buddies new bike, the guy we got it from gave us this stuff his father inlaw makes, its bio-degradable and it makes the shit just drip off the chain, it works amazing and you can just do it over a sewer drain or in your grass haha, when he showed it to us he had a filthy chain on his other bike he sprayed this stuff on let it sit for 10 mins and sprayed it off the chain looked brand new! ill have to get more details about it he said he was going into production with it

This- on the O-ring chains- gas, kero, whatnot- all kills the o-rings. on the MX bikes, we use non-O-ring chains and just clean/lube the chains regularly.

I used to use kerosene, I now use brake cleaner to clean the chain. I must say the results are faster and much cleaner.

With kerosene I found myself scrubbing the chain for a long period of time.

I just switched to this stuff it isn’t bad far less fling off then the other band I was using.

Gasoline, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, etc hurts the o-rings. But kerosene and diesel are ok. Some manufacturers even recommend using kerosene to clean the chain (I think Suzuki does).

ah, yes- correction- Kero (and in some cases diesel, I guess) are acceptable/suggested. But be sure to actually lube the chain afterwards, otherwise the dry o-rings will crack anyway.

I did also see several references to Suzuki manuals suggest using kerosene for cleaning the chain.

it depends on the brake cleaner you use, Honda even recommends brake cleaner.

Been using simple green on my bike (bicycle) chain for years and its never let me down. Simple green to clean, then dry it off and apply wax/lube of your choice right after. I know it’s not a motorcycle but its the same concept.
