Same here. I am waiting for Verizon to install FIOS in our townhouse community. As of now it is scheduled for the spring. I am really looking forward to it, I have been wanting FIOS since my parents got it in their neighborhood last year.
I had dialup, then got dsl. That was a huge step up in speed. then I got cable and that was a very big step up from dsl. I hope fios is as good as I hear it is.
I normally get ~500k down and regurally see over 1mb down(in actual download speed) so I am quite happy with my cable right now. What speeds are people getting with fios?
Where do you see those speeds at? From websites or peer2peer sharing?
just to give you an idea
verizons highest fios package at the moment is actually twice that, 30mb down
those are right at the advertised speeds so hopefully anyone who upgrades isnāt using an older computer that could barely handle xp
just downloading files from websites. I am not a fan of speedtests though, comcast has this speedboost or some shit that ups the speed at first then goes down thru the download. Speedtests are fairly inaccurate with these, but I will try one when I get home from work.
I usually download xp service pack 2 from microsoft to determine how fast my internet is. Their servers are fast and consistent, I am normally over 1mb down from their thru the whole download.
thats not a bad way to benchmark top speed especially since there are so many inconsistencies throughout the interweb.
i like http://www.speedtest.net it seems to be pretty good at getting the actual speed no matter which connection your using
comcast and fios are a trade offā¦ once fios gets the user base and saturation (tv, phone, internet) of the users like comcast, itāll level offā¦ iām sorry but fiber has latency and limits just like anything elseā¦ do people honestly think that comcast runs coaxle from their distribution blocks? reallyā¦ fios terminates the fiber in your house, comcast terminates it at the poleā¦ :gives:
ibfiosemployeestellmeimwrong
I agree
so basically, do you want to sit on hold with verizon or comcast?
good job on stating the obvious, itās marketing that plays a key in this, verizon made the jump first and obviously comcast isnāt doing something right being stuck at 8 mbās where as fios is running at 30
āibfiosemployeestellmeimwrongā i donāt work for verizon anymore nor do i have the āall knowingā mentality that you seem to carry
I canāt even max out a cable connection at 8mb, what is the extra 22mb going to do?
there is always going to be a bottleneck somewhere, unless you live in koreaā¦
but itās marketing, just them saying āiām faster than the next guyā FIOS will be really great all around as soon as the voice and television services hit with it, if i remember the specs correctly it was
32 television customers
32 internet customers
128 voice customers
per fiber optic strand
Thank you for explaining it so I didnāt have to.
what marketingā¦ FIOS was a new product in the market that was a monopoly (discounting DSL for arguments sake, referring to highspeed cable interweb)ā¦ also, deflate your headā¦ anything you say will never play a role in my lifeā¦ there are REAL fios employeesā¦ not cell phone jockies, but guys that install the stuffā¦ i was referring to themā¦ you know, people that have actual knowledge of the technology.
itās coolā¦ itās way more in depth than that, but thatsā my takeā¦ the inherent value of FIOS is that itās a switched technology, coax is simply a shared lineā¦ the segmentation allows FIOS to be predictable and granular in itās serviceā¦ then again, there are issues with that, the limitations of the fiber is quoted ālimitlessā but the technology behind the transporting and receiving is what is the limitā¦ the point being that comcast uses coax hybrid fiber to make the distance and breaks it up in the neighborhoodā¦ the limit with coaxle could be the argument that if my neighbor is an ultimate hack3r like xlogic and he says up all night testing uploads and downloads the coaxle will eventually āstealā my bandwidth to allow him moreā¦ the non switched portion of coaxle allows for increased traffic and overhead due to collisions and broken packetsā¦ the switched fios though, will limit the user at the port level so that they canāt utilize the ālimitlessnessā of fiber (lol), fiber can only be spliced so far then it needs to be regenerated which causes overheadā¦ older technologies require that traffic to be decoded and re-encoded when its regenerated which causes latencyā¦ the law of diminishing returns and oversubscription are inherent in this conversation, so whateverā¦ itās all junk and it all goes to the same place, the internet.
so when are you signing up for netzero?
i donāt use the internetā¦ itās just a gimmick
teh interweb is for p0rn
In case you donāt know when i was working for verizon i was flown to DC to get āREALā training on the fiber optic technology that i would be selling as a service. My head was never inflated, the only time i open my mouth on any subject is when i at least have a general understanding on what it is and how it works. Make yourself more clear next time and donāt come off as such a jackass everytime you and i are in the same thread and maybe things would do smoother. We got off on the wrong foot from the beginning and you coming in with your attitude doesnāt help. Iāve said it before, i know my shit but computers/IT isnāt my thing, itās boring, iāll let you be the nerd to program the next door neighbors VCR :kekegay:
