I’m going to start up a small project. I’ve been doing some research on how to make molds to create a clear plastic lens. This is my car as it sits right now:
What I’m trying to make is a clear, rather then foggy lens to replace my current DTRL’s.
I could easily buy these but they would run me too much money (Listed at:$430.00). I figure I can pick up the materials and make these simply in my garage for less cost then buying these LED retro-fitted ones. Since I don’t plan to mass produce these, and I’ll only be making a pair for my car to match my existing turn signals, then I don’t need to worry about the mold standing up to creating many many replicas. So my question to you guys (if any of you have experience) is, what products do you suggest I use for creating:
A) A mold, and
B) The clear substance for creating the lens
Also where do you suggest I buy these products? I don’t need to buy large quantities of these materials either, hence the whole purpose in not purchasing the ones I used as an example above.
So if anyone can link me some good walkthroughs of how to create molds/lens you’ve found on google that I may not have come by, or just some good advice from personal experiences I’d really appreciate the help!
hmm i dont know anything about this, but if it turns out well, post some pics, definately would like to see…was thinkin of doin a clear mold for my s14 zenki headlights…
Plastic World. get some acrylic sheet or lexon? plastic, which is used for car headlights. To mold, use a Heater strip. It’s not expensive either, for like 8’x4’ sheet you can get it chopped up to whatever size for like $60. g/l on your project.
Well I’ve figured out what I’m going to be doing. I’ve found a hobby shop in Hamilton that will sell the things I need to do this. I should be able to do this for under $100, and still be able to create multiple lenses with the molds. So what I need now is to find some people that are willing to sell DTRL’s. I need a set that are in immaculate condition. So if anyone is selling some, or can point me to a thread on the forum that I’ve missed then please feel free to post here, or PM. I think I’ll start this project on the weekend, as it will take about 2 full days of waiting for both the silicon molds, and the clear plastic to set. This is, of course, assuming that I can get my hands on some DTRL’s before hand.
the clear corners ones are just stock ones that have polished lenses, they still have the original Nissan ICHIKOH manufactures labeling visible. the main resoan they look diffferent tho is the paint the inside of the housings when adding the led’s
… does no one take science classes any more?? those odd looking shapes on the lens are these for a reason, (that’s what makes them DOT ), you NEED those to disperse and diffuse the light… that’s a nice MOT ticket and very easy for a cop to spot.
find someone who has a Y! japan account , you can get at very least some laser cut clears for $100 or less.
