Cleck's MR2 build - gonna be awhile

Well since I have decided to keep the car for various reasons, I thought I’d share my build of the car since I bought it in March of 09.

Bought a 91 MR2 Turbo with t-tops, pw/pl, all that fun stuff from BJ before he moved to Japan, didn’t really know what I was getting into.

Car had some previous owner neglect to it: stereo speaker and hu wiring all fubar’d, body damage, interior wear, etc etc. The norm for a 19 year old sports car.

First thing I found out is that it’s got a Gen II JDM engine swapped into it, BJ had no idea either. Car has about 147k on it, no idea on the mileage of the swap :frowning:

For now I’ll just let the pics talk and then I’ll explain what I’ve done.

These first pics are what the car looked like in the shop, being painted by Justin aka Audiochef on Roclife. There was definitely some body damage, and all the moldings were “shaved”, but they were actually just glassed over really shittily. Every where they were glassed, they showed right through the paint, in huge cracks down the sides of the car.

Here’s how it looked when I got it:

That was the bumper that came off - or should I say fell off as soon as Justin removed the glass holding the rear moldings in that covered the screws.

Also comes with these 15" BBS wheels which I currently have my autocross tires on but will be using them for daily wheels now that I have a full set of +93 wheels.

Show the wiring in a minute…

good luck with the project

Some more body work pics. There you can see him holding the molding in his hands, what it looks like w/out a shitload of bondo on it. He took it out and welded in a steel plate instead, then glassed over it. More paint pics, rust repair in the wheel wells and more dent repair.

Eventually I’d like to get a Walker Japan front bumper on, the bottom of it kinda swoops down, would be a nice transition to the sideskirts. I had a 91 lip on the front but after being towed home from Leicester this summer, apparently part of my tow fee was half of my lip. The bumper is in shitty condition anyways so I’m not worried. For now I can deal with it.

Here’s when I got the car back, went with a flat black DP90 for now, needs clear. Waiting for the whole car to get bodyworked, then painted.

Should be really nice when done. Been in my friends 93 turbo a few times, nice cars

Wiring in the car before:

After new head unit, speakers, 12v power source in lighter location. Also showing off the LED mod that BJ did when he owned it.

Took the car to Leicester for my first time, ran a 14.99 at 91 on a very humid day. Never drag launched before, so I had to experiment. After my 8th pass or so, went looking for 2nd and never found it. Thought the tranny was gone but after towing it home, then borrowing a trailer (and truck) from Centola, I got it to school and we got it on the lift. Shifter cable bushings were just gone. After 19 years, I never thought the rubber would just disintegrate :smash2:. Who knew? Replaced with brass bushings, shifting is definitely more solid now but I still need a new tranny - shit grinds going into 2nd on drag launches, so that’s why I don’t go much.

I drained and filled the trans over the summer with Mobil 1 synthetic, but they’re still there. Next option is to adjust the clutch, hopefully it helps but it prolly won’t, according to my reading.

Over the summer I also wired in a keyless entry, so now that works perfectly in conjunction with the Toyota factory alarm system the car had but I never knew it had until I looked up the wiring diagram.

All the wires under the dash are a mess. I did my best to clean them up and tighten some stuff up under there, but they’ve been hacked into for the Omori boost and Prosport water temp gauges.

I mod the car in spurts, depending on if we’re caught up on stuff or not, so with a lil tax money I bought new tires 205/50/15 f, 225/50/15 r Kumho Ecstas, nothing fancy but enough to plow around daily for 6 months or so.

Also replaced the front wheel bearing, jumpered the relay for the intercooler fan (cooling fan ecu is smoked), reinstalled that scratched speedo cluster glass, turbo inlet elbow (old one was cracked and leaking).

Removed the horns which sounded like sheep dying and bought 08 tC horns off ebay (plug right in!), ball joints, t-stat, valve cover gasket, engine lid rain guard and some camber bolts.

Thinking of springing for a catch can, mbc and fuel cut defender. That’ll prolly do it for this year. I do have an ebay intercooler though that I need fabbed in and I’ve got a set of RSR springs waiting for Koni strut inserts. I’d love to install those now, but I’m pretty sure the stock struts would blow in my first corner of autocross, lol.

Being a Toyota student at MCC has its perks - I can look up any info I need through TIS and perform all my work at school for free.

This was my tiny work space the other night. I was under the car removing the horns (what a bitch) and drilling out the lower radiator mounts which were rusted and had bolts snapped off in them. Not fun, but hey, this is what we do. Definitely need a new radiator, would love a Mishimoto direct replacement, but like I said, I think I’ve reached my limit for parts for the year…for now

i love these body styles…looking good so far

Thanks! Long way to go - as long as I can weather the storm that goes, “Did you buy another part for the Mr. 2?”

I guess you like a challenge

Yeah I don’t and won’t ever have the money to buy something nice right away and all I got is time so that I can work with.

It’s a shame you’re not in Buffalo, it’d be nice to help you with this…

damn that car looked like aids b4 u fixed up the back, actually looks good now, even with the flat black

Glad to see you kept it. Looks to me you got some scratches on your gauge cluster cover. You should buff those out…

Yeah, there’s one or two. Sure they’ll just buff right out.

I’m glad I kept it too, I was kind of tired of the whole selling process though. Really brings out the best in everybody, lol. Plus seeing it sitting in my garage just made me want to keep working on it, and working to push through the hell going on around me right now.

Car looked like aids, hahahaha. There is truth to that though. Now it’s just got some severe acne I’d say.

man still looks a 1000 times better, just keep puttin in work n dont lose interest. these lil cars are awesome

I’ll never lose interest, just money. I’m not one to get bored with projects.

Got the new tires on the “old” autocross wheels, finally bought a set of lugnuts that all matched (old ones were 17/19mm) and mounted these today in my shack.

Wheels are BBS 15x7 +35 all around with 205/50 fronts and 225/50 rears. I like em much better than the 14x6 14x7 setup on the 91 style wheels.

Kumho V710 205/50/15 225/50/15 autocross tires were swapped over to 93+ style wheels.

Will have more shots in the shop tomorrow.
