Coilover talk

Ok, DEBATE TIME!

I’m currently using TEIN Type HE dampers. Ride is soo bumpy for daily driving its driving me nuts!!! Yet, I love the performance (road race setup for my 240sx), but hey, gotta give a little to get a little. Anyone here rockin’ a set of coilovers and what kind? Any suggestions of which brand to switch to (i.e. silk road, kei office, JIC magic…) Any ups and downs with your setup?

I also heard that HEs have a tendency to take a s–t on you. Anyone else hear of this rumor? I need feedback from different coilover users so I know where to upgrade to…right now considering TEIN Type Super Drift damper w/EDFC.

My first question is: Why coilovers? Do you really need the height adjustability, or is it just a want? If you don’t “need” it, why not just grab a nice set of adjustable dampening struts and springs?

Here is a users webpage much like yours and a whole write up on different coilovers: http://driftkat.com/Nissan240SXCoilovers.php

Hope that helps on the theory of the different coilovers. Now for some users stories.

well…coilovers because I’m already in that area with the HEs…just wanna stay within the coilover family

Iif its bouncy, turn up the stiffness on the struts. My D2 was bouncy when i had my settings at full soft.

my favorites are JIC. but i guess my teins basics will do for now

Im running tanabe sustic pro’s up front that are pretty old school. The strut is not adjustable but there perfect for me, they have pillow ball mount and are height adjustable. There super stiff but still good for the street. For the rear I have Tien Na which is an old school adjustable strut setup with a lowering spring. Im not too sure how they are working yet cuz there is like a foot of snow here. I hate winter. My friend Rob had Tien HA’s on his Silvia and they worked awsome. On soft they were good for the street and on stiff that thing would drift out with a flick of the wheel. I really liked them. All they needed were a pillow ball set up.

my first question is aaron have you ever ridden in a properly damped coilover car?
.struts and springs r very bouncy…because if you look when u lower your car there is only like one inch. of travel…my silvia came with coilovers on the back, and struts in the front…its was bouncy…my 180sx had tokico potenza’s…it too was bouncy
when i got my sustec pro’s on both rides…no more bounce, lots of suspension stroke at all ride heights…

well im looking for a stiffer steup…like the HE…so if you dont like them, maybe u might consider a trade and some cash… PM me if your interested

when march time comes im gonna make the decision to switch to Type Super Drift or stay with HE…ill let you know if I am gonna sell the HEs

Nope, not that I know of. Thats probably the reason I don’t know what it rides like specifically, which is why I made the comment I did.

who makes your front bumper?

right now i am rocking the teins that came on my new car! i honestly have no idea what model though, i need to take them off and find a serial number! but they have a good feel to them, my old tein ha’s where AWSOME for daily driving and performance! turn the damper all the way to soft and the bumpiness goes away, turn them to hard and wham no more body roll!

That would probably be the factory aero kit that came factory with some of the silvias.

^^^^^yes its the factory areo bumper, very nice

I actually much prefer the k’s bumper, but i guess the lines of the aero bumper follow the lines of the car a little better, sharper!
you sold the car yet?

um…no, the areo bumper looks beter than most kit bumpers especially if the car has side skirts http://members.shaw.ca/typhoonslippery/summer2sil.jpg

factory AERO bumper and skirts are the nicest IMO.

What’s the best way to clean rust off coilovers?

Worth a shot I guess

u got teins dont you :stuck_out_tongue: but anyways for me the wire brush and varsol worked really good, also that brake cleaner shit u get at canadian tire ill get off any traces of grease with easss, its a high pressure spray and works wounders  but yeah try the wire brush and then repaint them

naw they’re cusco’s

They’re in rough shape, but they should only be temporary so I’m not too bothered if they suck. Thanks a lot for the advice though!

i have stuff at work that eats rust away.
