I’m actually a bit surprised you’re making this argument. Are you a fan of the gun control laws in this state because of the handful of incidents around the country?
Bingo.
I’m actually a bit surprised you’re making this argument. Are you a fan of the gun control laws in this state because of the handful of incidents around the country?
Bingo.
I’m surprised you aren’t able to see the huge difference. I, as a responsible car owner, have absolutely nothing taken away from me because police have an EMP capable of stopping irresponsible car owners who run from the police.
That’s definitely not the case with gun control. With gun control you’re punishing people who follow the laws and have done nothing wrong while people who break them just continue ignoring the new restrictions.
Laws do not change people’s/societies behavior, they just define the punishment for people’s behavior.
No matter how many laws are passed, enforced, etc… there will always be people who either figure out how to not get caught or thing the punishment is worth the risk.
I also view this at another avenue to start losing freedoms. Where does it stop? Will all cars be required to have OnStar like control? I can’t remember who said it, but it goes something like this: Your rights usually aren’t stripped away quickly. They are slowly chipped at without the majority realizing it until they’re gone and you can’t do anything about it.
Look at it this way
Right now they usually stop people by catching up and spinning them out or using spike strips hopefully this will end things quicker.
Police and other agencies already use OnStar and devices like Ezpass to track people it’s just not widely covered/publicized
I feel like the ability to disable a car like this is less on an infringement vs using onstar or some mandated kill switch in all vehicles.
The day will come when police simply press a button and your car will come to a controlled stop. Technology like OnStar, drive by wire, brake assist and the upcoming “networked cars” will make this a reality within 15 years I bet.
I understand that, and it’s a great point. I’m certainly not arguing it’s benefit when used properly. Things like just always beg the question; What’s next?
I think your on target there. It may even be sooner that that.
The only problem I see is with new vehicles with electric steering, electric brakes, and such, once these are fried you can’t stop or turn (at least easily).
The difference is this technology like Onstar can do it without destroying the vehicle… Electronics exposed to an EMP are toasted/destroyed. Just about any modern car would become a pile of scrap if it was subjected to this device.
Right but now you’re moving all of these requirements over to private companies and moving liability over.
Cops look up car -> Figure out it has on star -> make onstar turn it off -> car hits tree occupants die
Onstar just did this with out any court order and doesn’t know the exact situation other than the cops requesting it because of a police chase.
I posted articles on this before it’s completely possible to do bad things to a car remotely by exploiting OnStar/CD player/etc and manipulating data on the CAN bus.
No disagreements!
(I have to work similar security issues in regards to the CANBUS/Onstar crap… people are now hacking medical devices over WIFI… talk about fucking scary shit!!!)
Yes healthcare in general is a mess when it comes to security…All of the networked medical devices are crap and even larger hospitals with security staff seem to ignore the issue.
It doesn’t help that a lot of vendors give horrible advice.
One example I know of is if certain things to a neonatal care machine it will crash and stop functioning to keep a baby alive.
For people interested in car hacking the first video is really good but long - http://www.nyspeed.com/showthread.php?240793-Hacking-modern-cars
this is why i stick to my 95 s14 ;0 in 15 years they wont be net working my car
I know they say in the description that they don’t ‘believe’ it will have an impact, but I can only imagine what this would do for someone in the car with a pacemaker, implanted defib, morphine pump, insulin pump, etc.
Might be the last time they run from the police.
I’d like to see them run a test with a 69 nova…
hopefully cops will all have to drive slow smart cars because there will be no need to chase
Yea however with a 69 Nova going WOT running from the cops they would just wait 5min for it to run out of gas.
That’s basically how they caught that speeding bike in Dallas.
They need to try and catch smokey in the 1400whp supra, them Brits would have never caught up to him if he didnt pull over,
