Computer Maintenance

wanna clean up the computer and make it run better.
I normally use “Disk Cleanup” then “Disk Defragmenter”

Are there any other things I should do to get the most out of the computer?
Any other options or opinions?

Scan for spyware and viruses.

Go to www.filehippo.com and download a program called CCleaner. Use it to clean out all the unnecessary crap built up in your system.

Maybe get spybot or some other spyware cleanup tool.

I have norton, I’ve scanned and no spyware or viruses

Remove it. Instant PC speed gains.

CCleaner deletes all the crap that builds up from browsing the internet, etc.

Ive heard many people saying that norton slows down the computer. but i really didnt notice a differenence from before i had it to now…
it has worked well for me and I dont trust any other programs out there. Ive downloaded other stuff before like AVG and shit and it seemed to have gave me spyware from it.

I’ve heard of shit like registy cleaner and I dunno if i can trust it and dont know exactly what it does.

worthless info: I’m tryin out my new bluetooth keyboard on the PS3

CCleaner isn’t like all of those hack-job registry programs. It has a built in registry scanner that deletes no longer valid entries in the registry, but it’s main feature is that it deletes all of your temporary internet files, and other miscellaneous log and backup files that build up over time.

Also, do a start->Run and msconfig.
On the startup tab, disable everything that you don’t need to start when your computer starts.

  1. Delete temporary Internet files.

  2. Delete everything in temp directory in:
    c:\documents and settings%username%\local settings emp*.*

  3. Turn off stupid system restore.

  4. Make virtual memory settings equal: initial size = maximum size.

  5. AVG Free > Norton AV

x a billion.

If you know what services you need, you can disable the ones you will never use. I had a bunch that were starting automatically that I didn’t need.

Norton doesn’t slow down my comp either :dunno: All of my games and programs run smooth.

add memory and fuck maintenance

x2, and stay away from certain porn sites…you know which ones…spyware removal is no fun

how would I go about doing this?

right click my computer, click properties, click on advanced tab, in the performance section click on settings, click on advanced tab, in virtual memory section click on change. once you ar in there, change what you want.

it seems everyone has different thoughts on how big the pagefile should be, I say fuck it and let windows do it, but that’s just me.

Control Panel - System - Advanced Tab - Performance “Settings” button - Advanced Tab - Virtual Memory “Change” button
Select “Custom Size” make both settings equal and hit “Set” button
I make pagefile AT LEAST twice the size of installed physical memory.
The whole idea of this tweak is to keep Windoze from constantly dynamically allocating more/less virtual memory space.
This wastes cpu cycles and disk activity instead of using it to do something more productive like looking at pron.

Control Panel - System - System Restore Tab
Click the box that says: “Turn Off System Restore on all Drives”
Hit “OK” or “Apply” button.
Once again, wasted cpu and disk maintaining a system restore area that works MARGINALLY at best.

change to 1800 for both or 3000 for both?

or do you have another idea for a number?

exactly how many cpu cycles does it take windows to adjust the pagefile? Do you actually think setting this to a static number will speed up the system any?

In theory, it may help, but never have I seen this do anything for performance in the real world.

U don’t have much disk space left, so I’d set them both to 1800 or even the recommended 1150.

Not really much cpu savings here, just eliminates unnecessary disk activity dynamically sizing page file.

Every little bit helps.

If you know what they do, or can find out from a reliable source, disable whatever services windows runs that you don’t need, this made mine run a good deal faster.
