Consuming Brake Fluid?

well like it says, iv noticed that the fluid lv in my brake fluid container goes down every now and then more and more, there is no fluid drops anywere under the car or on the ground, if it were squirting out ther would be some stains somewere on the car, can anyone help me out.

oh, its a 91 hatch,

Your brake fluid will go down as your pads wear. Unless it’s really dropping fast this is normal.

yeah it will drop slightly but not to the point where you should notice.

your calipers are probaly leaking and the fluid is burning off on the rotors or dripping as you drive.

start your car up on a clean piece of ground and pump the brakes for about a min then check for leaks…

well in a weeks time it went down like 1cm, throughout all the cars iv owned iv never seen it go down that fast, could there be somthin that would be burning it off??? probly a stupid Q?

Yes. How old is the fluid? If it’s contaminated with water it’s boiling resistance will be negatively affected.
Still, get under your car and search along the brake lines that run front to back. If they’ve gotten rusty over time you may have a small leak. Don’t let it go. Small leaks turn into big leaks at a moments notice.

Yes which can inturns mean mating your car with a TTC Bus…

Oh too close last year.

k awsome guys, ill have to go and check that out, iv been filling it up with DOT 4, if i end up flushing the system, would that be a good way to go, or maby jump up to the DOT 5 and what not.

Do NOT use DOT 5 fluid. It is silicone based and can gunk up brake lines on older cars. It’s not intended for ABS, does not mix with DOT 3 and 4 fluid, is a complete bi*ch to bleed through the lines and it costs an arm and a leg. Stick with what your manual tells you to use.

Good luck.

i dont have ABS so. if that makes any diff. but ill stick with DOT 3

well i believe i found the problem, i have a small pinhole maby not even a hole, but one brake line that runs alone the firewall is wet so im goin to replace a good chunk of it.
